Hi everyone, I am seeking for help with the following…I have a Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0 SD V6 HSE which has done approx. 90k miles.

The car failed at Christmas, so I had it towed to JLR to inspect. They have said I would need a new engine, due to a crank shaft failure. I have managed to get JLR to foot 40% of the cost of a new engine. So the new engine fitted is going to cost £10,800.

My aim is that I want to sell the car with the new engine in which will have a 2 year warranty with JLR.

Can anyone offer any advice on this, how to value the car (best/worst case scenario) or the best place to list the car?

Welcome:) and sorry you had to join for such a reason:(.

@blue beasty can you please move to appropriate section:).

So as for the value I have no idea I would say look at the for sale adds to get an idea.
I would also check that the JLR warranty for the engine will pass to the new owner, I would image it will but worth asking the question.
At least you got some out of JLR but its still a chunk of outlay.

Sadly that engine suffers from this issue and has given it bad name that many are aware of. would that reflect in the price with a replacement engine I don't know. Also dont know if JLR did anything to stop it happening again, if they didn't then the new buyer will still be driving a ticking time bomb.

@gstuart will probably know a bit more.

Why not keep it?:) Its got a new engine;).

Firstly, apologies on posting in the wrong section. I would love to keep the car, but was always my intention to sell, before this happened :(
I have checked and thankfully the new owner would be able to take on the warranty.
Thank you for replying, I will have a look into the sale adds

No worries about posting it will get moved to better section when BB has had his afternoon cake feast nap:).

I didnt mean adds here but just in general.

@discodiscodisco1 Welcome to the forum, sorry its under such circumstances....

Honestly, I wouldn't go down that road with a ten, nearly eleven grand bill from JLR, you aren't getting the ten plus grand back as the new engine might at best add a couple of grand to the vehicle price, but that still leaves you eight grand down. My suggestion would be to get an independent garage to supply and fit a running / recon egine for less than half that price. I've just done a quick eBay search and came up with this listing offering that service for four grand.

Just searching on eBay for "sdv6 engine supply and fit" came up with 30 results, some are offering refurbished engines, some fitting used but running engines, the nearest / cheapest one of those would be my suggestion. You might want to phone around them and see who if any offer. If you could get an indy to give you a warranty on the engine, that would probably give you the same uplift on the cars value and cost you half as much to get there.

hiya

See where ur coming from but alas wouldn’t ever touch an eBay engine , engines from a reputable company are approx £4,500 - £5.500 , plus labour including lifting the body off , even a D3 engine are around that range , many of the ebay engines are re builds and not recons ,

funny enough D3 and 4’s are demanding good money at the moment , think the last few D4 owners have paid around 7k , D3 owners around 6k for a full recon Inc fitting / vat

Fair point on not necessarily trusting an "ebay engine expert" - but it's still a world of difference financially from nine grand plus VAT from JLR, who are footing 30% of the bill, to £6k/£7k from an indi for a refurb engine... So yeah, we are on the same page, even if we are reading different paragraphs of it.

indeed couldn’t agree more , does seem the 6/7k range for a fully fitted recon engine is about right for an indi

not surprising from JLR charging that much seeing there hourly rate is now roughly £200 plus vat ,

at least now there are a few indi garages that can repair these engines as before JLR wouldn’t release a crankshaft to anyone apart from another JLR garage garage , think when I last looked a genuine crankshaft was 2k on its own

Plus shame JLR attitudes stink , , nil customer service or politeness , another reason I no longer give them the time of day , so pleased I’ve got my own diagnostics , ref Gap iid

You won't be able to add the whole cost of the new engine to the vehicle value, as suggested above, maybe a couple of grand tops.
The D4 can be bought for as little as £10k now, going up to around £18k forecourt price for a low miles mint condition one.
So if you splash out over 10k on an new engine, and can sell it privately for £18k, you'll effectively be selling the the vehicle for under £8,000.

Alternatively just sell it as is on ebay, where good condition D4s with failed engines do sell for over £6k, if the right buyer comes along.

Or how about replacing the engine with a second hand one from a Jaguar, which would be about ½ the new replacement price, so when you sell the vehicle, you'll retain more of its value for yourself.
