anyone tried it

the gearbox on my 109 series 3 has quite a bit of rattle in it at the top of its rev range and will need an overhaul or replacement when i"ve finished the 101 other little jobs on my list i was looking at glencoyne engineering"s web site and was interested in the custom service where they can change the ratio"s to suit your needs and as i have a large compressor that runs off my p.t.o so can"t fit an overdrive was just wondering if anyone had used this service or new much about it weather it"s cost effective and what sort of improvements it makes i am looking for a bit more top end and don"t mind loosing a bit lower down as i pull away in 2nd gear most of the time anyway thanks for your time paul

I was also considering this change in the high ratio box.

Parts for the swap are about £250+Vat so not a lot more than a second hand OD but without the worry of buying a dog.

Ashcroft Transmissions

Ratio is slightly higher than the Fairey in final drive which given my 1st gear is only used for hill starts and the in 4th I start to over rev before the engine runs out of power seems to make sense.

I also considered the RR diffs as a solution but this has an impact on the speedo accuracy and hand brake efficiency according to those who know more than me.

The transfer box conversion only affects high range , whereas diff changes alter your overall reduction in low as well. Re the handbrake if its that marginal to be bothered by a diff change then there is something not right with it anyway.

as mine is a 109 with the sailsbury axle i don"t think the RR diffs are an option someone will correct me if i"m wrong but i think its only possible on short wheel base models with rover axles

yup - the rangie/disco/defender diffs only fit Rover axles.

(unless any were built with salisbury axles?)

i think the glencoyne one is the main gear box were as the one from ashcroft is the transfer box any one got any experience of either the transfer one seems very reasonable when second hand fairey"s are fetching 300 squid with no garentees
