Anyone running a 2.5 Diesel on veg oil ?

Is anyone running a 2.5 Diesel RangeRover on veg oil ? Also realistically what mpg do you get on a manual 2.5 DT ?

I run a 200Tdi Disco on SVO, 25% diesel when below +5c, 40% when below 0c and full SVO when temp is long term over +5c.

So far all I did to it in preperation was put a new fuel filter on.

On straight Veg it does better m.p.g., about 32-34 urban and easily maintains the new vehicle quoted 40 on a run.

On any other mixture it is slightly lower than new vehicle quoted m.p.g. but I would expect that seeing as how it is 16 years old and has done 222k miles!

Starting is o.k. but warm-up is more sluggish.

My idea is to wait until something gives up, then see what, why and how badly.

Then fix it, as Landies are cheaper than most fourbies to fix, then tailor the repair/modification to avoid re-occurence.

5,400 miles so far and not one miss-fire, failure to start or indeed any anomaly to report!

I was gazing longingly at the vegetable oil on the shelf in Asda today, 73p per litre, I'd love to stick that in my tank, but guess I am at the other end of the scale of easy repairs to you, with my BMW engine.

4 hours to change glow plugs it took me due to poor packaging, German engineering? Pah!

...no sold my disco 300tdi friday and bought a RangeRover 2.5 DT. I ran my disco on heated veg for 10,000 miles and now want to do the same on my RangeRover. Already checked out DieselVeg Home - Diesel to Vegetable Oil engine conversions and there's one already converted, but wondered if anyone has done one.

the 200TDI is the engine fitted in the later factory diesel RR Classics isnt it?, am quite interested in getting a diesel that runs on veg oil too, was going to get a Pug 406 as they can take veg oil without mod and keep the RR for green laning only but if i can get a diesel classic instead i would rather do that.

I have run mine on a biodiesel (yes I know not exactly veg oil) and it runs well until the weather gets colder and then it gets harder to start so reduce it down to 50/50 with diesel, Iwould change the fuel filter a bit more regularly to start with as mine had more sediment in the bottom of the filter the first couple of changes, and then ok after that.

I have just looked into running my disco on veg oil after having my fuel injection pump repaired. The company that fitted it all for me reckoned that it should not be a problem. In the winter to do a mix but in the summer nothing to stop you using 100% veg oil.
Bit dubious but thought that i would play safe and do a mix.
Put £30 worth of diesel than put 20 litres of veg oil (£13.99) into it.
Worked perfect.
Got more for my money price wise.
What fuel injection pump you got.
I think that bosch are the best for this

What model is your Disco, if it's a TD5 then very risky as I researched this loads and no TD5 has yet been converted.. Veg Oil is 5 times thicker than diesel and goes even thicker below 3 deg C, any lower then it turns to jelly. Any diesel running on veg or veg/diesel mix should have the fuel heated above 80- deg C otherwise injector coking can occurr over long periods of time... Read up on Dieselveg.com and google the subjest as much as possible before trying this out..

only thing i can suggest is lads next time i get a 525tds in ill throw veggie innit and see how it runs round the grounds for a while then report back to you. the only way you will know is to try it but at least it would be on a scrapper and not a 4k up p38.

Its a 2.5 300TDI, 1995.
I was told that i could do this no problems from a company that specialises in
Land Rovers. I know that veg oil is thicker than diesel, that why i did a 50/50 mix.

any one had any joy with a p38 range rover (bmw lump)
Do i heat it?
can i just mix 50/50 and that is it?

Been doing it for a while.
No probs as of yet.
Run on 50/50 for a while thne did 100%.
Landy seemed to have more power.
Was worried about starting in the mornings though.
Read some alarming articles.
Also it all depends what pump you have.
Bosch is the best!!

I've gor the 2.5 BMW engine, you still need to heat the oil even at 50/50 mix as you'll suffer from injector coking after a while...

How do you heat your fuel?

I heat it through a KTM Heat Exchanger, but prior to starting the car a Webasto Heater starts up and heats all the engine water up to running temp. This way I can start on veg.

I have the P38 BMW V6 2.5 lump, running on about 30% veg oil, no heaters, no messing, no problems. The key is the fuel pump, if it's a Bosch your fine, if it's a Lucas expect problems. Also common rail diesels don't like veggie so be warned.

Regular servicing and change the fuel filter at each service.

A mate of mine supplies me with veggie oil, he runs his rover on 100% veg oil and it has pretty much the same engine. His only problem was a flat battery because he was heating the oil to start on veggie, now sorted that prob.

My only prob is the simultaneous failure of my front door central locking which happened this morning.

how can i tell what fuel pump i have. i have tried to look at what i think is the fuel pump.

look at the engine right hand side towards the front.followed pipe from fuel filter. but i cannot see any writing on it

This is all very interesting from a technical point, but how do you stand legally? Using veg oil on a highway when no fuel duty has been paid? If they stop you and dip your tank are you in trouble the same as if you were using red diesel?

It seems too good to be true otherwise.

OK, downloaded the full workshop manual for the P38a and according to it all P38's have Bosch Rotary Fuel pumps, and unless anyone on here knows any different I kind of think the workshop manual is probably correct. Not tried it yet as I only picked mine up last night!

Hi

Regs are a bit different for veg fuel/biodiesel , I think, you can use the first 2,750 litres (again, I think) tax free and then only pay after that. As to the duty, how the hell anyone is going to prove the amount of fuel you have burnt so far this year I am not sure.

That is my opinion and I am sticking to it until someone comes along and tells me I'm wrong.
