i Emailed Hawkeye makers and this was there reply

Basically, fire up the Hawkeye, scroll to security, then transmitters and follow the instructions( as simple as that ). You will need to program all your fobs at the same time. Not just the new/second hand one. Failure to do this will make your old fobs inactive! Follow the prompts for each fob and you should be fine. Please make sure you have the correct frequency fob – for this country it is 433mhz.

I haven't tried this but....I found the following on eBay from a seller that was selling these instructions up until eBay changed its policy toward distribution of digital media.

Freelander (with Rover type 2 button remote)
Procedure
Unlock the car using the key, then operate the lock button on the handset at least 4 times.
Alternative Method
Procedure
Unlock the car using the key, then press lock & unlock buttons alternately several times
Alternative Method
Procedure
1. Lock car by using key in lock
2. Move out of range and press button on fob for 5 secs.
3. Unlock car door with key but do not open door
4. Standing near the vehicle, press the dotted button 4 times very quickly, the door should lock
5. Then press the unlock button and door should unlock.

I have just bought a spare key fob so I'm going to give it a go anyway

£60 all in on this link + £24 refundable when the programmer is returned to them.
I've never used them myself so cannot recommend them but I think I've seen this link on here before somewhere ;)

Land Rover Freelander Key Fob

Edited...Just looked a bit more and they will recondition a worn/broken fob too ...no programming involved

Ive just used these guys and they were great, I had an intermittent fault with mine sent it for reconditioning they rang me as it seemed to be working when they got it so they wanted to confirm a fault. It only took 3 days from posting it to receiving it back. It works perfectly £40 well spent!! :)

Is that with a new fob or used one?

Yep, I have them in mind if I get any fob problems - thanks for the feed back

have read all the links about reprogramming these keys & tried the bonnet up ignition on off thing but you will find it cant be done without a diagnostic machine got mine done @ NLS security a locksmith in newcastle £45 to program the fobs £65 to supply new fob if required . so check out your local locksmith it will save you a lot of grief trying out all these different so called fixes & cheaper than a dealer.

I'm going to Wicken 4x4 to get my spare fob programmed and the alignment checked on Wednesday. But for giggles I thought I would try the four step procedure with the bonnet switch. I tried it by having the driver's window down, bonnet up and me holding the bonnet switch down. First time, nothing happened, the second time the rear door window went down by itself all the way past the wiper - how mad is that ? I still don't have the third fob working on my my2004 facelift freelander.

Today I got my 3rd key fob programmed at Wicken 4x4, great service, and they let me watch while they did the alignment too. The programming took about 5 minutes, a hand held touch screen device was plugged into the passenger foot well, some menu options pressed, and the horn went, then each blipper had its unlock key pressed five or so times until the lights blinked. All for a mere £25 + VAT. I also discovered at the same time I have an oil heater in the passenger front wing. not working at present, but was told to check the fuse, the computer had registered a fault for it of supply missing, which makes sense as the thermostat is not working, the oil heater would be on all the time ££££ out the window there.
