Hi all, my mate has a 2002 TD5 defender 110 and he has just installed a split-charge 2 battery system (don't know any more than this) and apparently when he tries to connect the batteries he is getting "a load of sparks".

I'm going round to see him this afternoon but does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to why this might be happening?

Cheers

Dave

either of the above. Depends on how many 'loads' are.

Check, if his battery IS the right way round, that he has wired up the relay correctly.

In fact, make sure someone who knows how car wiring works fits it, cos if its wrong you have a fire. I dnt think insurance pays for fires started by home made wiring.

Thanks very much for your helpful comments (that does NOT include you MHM) I've just got back from his place and all is working well.

He had in fact wired everything up correctly, the sparks he spoke of were tiny and solely due to some in-car stuff trying to draw juice as soon as the leads were put back onto the terminals.

So no deaths, no fires, just a happy bunny with his new winch.

Cheers all

ooooo errr.

well i was just going to ask what amp relay he was using if using a winch, it should be rated pretty hi. what 2nd batt hes using, should not be using a deep cycle as they aint much good for winching. exc for fridges and lighting etc. If he was using a VSR setup, a simple relay setup or a diode blocking thingy whatsit...

just curious.

Hiya G, all I can tell you is that he's not using a split relay ??!! And the second battery is a Yellow top Optima.

Don't know enough about this subject to comment myself, but my mate seems to be happy so that's good enough for me :tea:
