anyone intrested in a day at yarwell quarry

What's the soil there like? The stuff at Sibbertoft is like grinding paste and eats everything - no good for my daily driver.

Sand is bad. But then any time you move off tarmac will increase wear and tear. I suppose its all about acceptable degree. This is an interesting point, you buy an SUV, albeit one of the first, then you need to weigh up cost of breaking it by using it off road!! I've been on a couple of play days with novice slopes and it is good fun but I was careful to minimise damage and I knew that one rear wheel bearings were fecked and replace both rears soon afterwards. What concerned me most was upsetting the ABS, TC, HDC delicate balance of working/not working.

DD's Hippo is pretty fecked at the moment thanks to a few trips around Sibbertoft. It survives them but it wears things very quicky - a D3 that was with us ate a new set of pads in one day there!

His Aux belt snapped a few days after the last one and had grit like you wouldn't believe in it, now his power steering pump has failed and he has been through 3 alternators.

Proper 4x4 parts are built to withstand this, Rover 75 parts are not. That's the depressing bottom line. Laning is fine, snow is fine, but thrashing it around a gravel pit can get expensive but it's up tp each Hippo owner :).

Yep, at the end of the day you are limited to how well the components stand up to certain kinds of abuse - can you blame LR? The FL would have cost the same at the time as a Disco if it had been hardened. It does what it says on the tin really.

DD hasn't been on much, he's buried with work and I think he needs something to get him interested again. We're planning a few things but it's all on paper at the moment, we need somewhere to work on the larger projects :(.

Well I'd like to rebuild a Defender but not a challenge truck for thrashing, just something that looks nice and fulfils my childhood dream. I'm thinking of building it to closely resemble the Fire Edition 110.

But we've got bigger plans than that and the ability to see them to realisation - it's cash and time that hold us back :(. We're still working on some Hippo accessories that will help with laning and general protection but we really want to something bigger.

Don't be put off mate. It will be great fun and there is bound to be loads of peps there that just want to have a bit o fun. Certainly not my intention to put anybody off - I'm at the end of my Freelander journey - as it were, so just nursing her along now.

Especially if you use it as a a work van
Bought mine cos i wanted a van and something to get me in and out of a field if the need arises as I do a bit of shooting.

Same boat boys, I've only just got the bleedin thing working reliable (on small coolant leak, pin prick rad leak soon to be remedied.)

But perhaps this summer we can find a venue which is fun but Hippo friendly and make a weekend of it ;).

nice place in Yeovil open 24hrs sat shuts at 4pm Sun licenced to sell booze and the speed humps aren't too severe. place is called Asda.. :D
