Not strictly speaking a 'land rover' question, but thought it more appropriate here than 'anything goes'.

I'm toying with the idea of getting myself a car ramp. They seem 'affordable' at around 1500EUR, but are there any particulars I should look out of when choosing? Brands, spec, ones to avoid? I want it mainly to work on the landy, but also some other cars in the family. I have quite a lot of stuff that needs doing and dread the thought of doing it lying down underneath.

Cheers

You can get them cheaper than that on ebay, especially if you get a three phase one and convert them.

I would really like one, but don't have the space

Just looking at Ebay, there seem to be quite a lot for sale. There are a great many ex-garage items to be had at less than £1000 provided you can go and pick them up. Wish I had a big garage with a high roof . . . .

I have access to a two post lift, only major issue is that the two arms on each side cannot be moved close enough to fit on the chassis rails of my 90 and if it did fit I think it would be front heavy. Think I would be more tempted to go for a drive-on 4 post lift even though it is not so useful for suspension jobs unless you have the additional sliding jack accessory (don't know its proper name)

I'm thinking of installing it in our warehouse as we have a small family company. However, we are also building a new garage next door which will have one of those pits (not sure what they're called) so I may wait instead and use that. I am almost certain the garage will get cluttered with stuff very soon though.

personally im wanting a 2 post lift as with a few attachments they will lift a 90 fine , might even modify my chassis so it has places to be lifted from , would be especially useful for body or suspension jobs i recon , biggest problem i have is that the floor has to be concreted for one which is expencive

I have one like this in a single garage at home, the garage doesn't give me space for the defender but it would work in a bigger space.
Only issue I find with it is the ladder type construction which limits the amount of work you can do under the car it's more suited for wheels etc.. And front and rear, which does cover most things, but still a pain to do gearboxes and exhausts.
Real benefit is that it's moveable, very heavy but wth a bit of help I can move it around as needed, which could be helpful if you need to get it out of the way.

used to use one of those in a garage i worked in , personally i found it a bit low for me (6.2) so lifting wheels off and stuff was at an awkward angle , ideal for doing an engine build on or big ends ect though ! lifts at a nice height to do on your back , also good for timing belts and stuff :)

Amazing how cheap you can bag a 4 post lift if you ask around. Especially as already mentioned if it's a 3 phase machine and these can be converted.

I picked mine up for 600 including 2 gearbox jacks and a blueprint trolley jack. A friend picked a four poster up for 90 quid!
