In the run up to getting my 90 an MOT i have came to doing the wiring. Looking behind my clocks has almost made me throw in the towel. The previous owner(s) have butchered it to a degree where i havent got a clue what i am looking at. Bullet connectors everywhere, different coloured wires being spliced on. Bits twisted together etc etc.

Aside from being a bloody nightmare, im looking at the possibility of a fire hazard now that would ruin everything ive done so far.

How much wiring does one of these things actually need?

Lights, dash and warning lights, temp and fuel senders, ignition and starter right?

How hard would it be to just rip out the whole damn lot and start from scratch?

as above, get a new loom unless you are good with the solder, mine has been botched big time, scotch locks everywhere and the headlights were wired in by twisted wires and black tape!!

You will probably find that its just the dash loom thats been butchered - you could buy some matching coloured wires are re do it 1 wire at a time :)

What he said. Find the original wire, it'll be old old dirty dusty one that's a bugger to get to and rewire it one at a time. You could always start the crimp vs solder debate :D

Herein lies the problem to a point. I know that the car was in a fire previously at some point. It has been dodgily rewired in the past and lots of old useless wiring left behind. I don't know what works and what doesn't. I have several bullet connectors jus sitting around not doing anything.

Original one will have bits not in use. You have a multimeter don't you ;)

Follow all the wires, if they are left over and not connected to the loom, then rip them out.

Personally, I'd prefer doing it a bit at a time so I can still drive it, than take everying apart and refit. If it turns into a mare when you are into it, then buy another loom.

There's two I took earlier

Strip it right back to the dash tray where it meets the fuse box dude, then put it back one wire at a time recycling the good and replacing the bad.you will find most of it does bugger all and you are fitting a switch console anyway aren't you?

Yeah fitting some sort of switch console. How much do I really need?

Fuel level and warning
Illumination
Lights
Indicators
Hand brake
Ignition
Oil pressure
Temperature
High beam
Diff lock
Fog light

Am I missing anything? That's already a **** storm of wires. Half of them functions don't work already either. One that had phantomly came on is a seat belt warning light :-\

Ive got the same prob only i have original wiring in the middle, new different coloured wires scotch locked behind the dash and to a second hand replacement fuse box from what vehicle, god only knows. 2 smoke outs behind the dash so far!
