That's the same story with me, my old man hates the defender. And now he's saying I told you so.
He want me to get a jap truck, but he has had nothing but problems with his navara d22, but it hasn't been smooth sailing with the defender either I suppose.

the way i see it, and i dont use my fender for work, tis just a toy.

You could get a navara, ranger, jap thing and it might be ok for a while if its newish. but when it goes wrong, it will cost a lot. Or you could look at say a bigger defender and get either a 200 or 300tdi and keep it simples. When a wheel bearing goes its on a few quid to replace. When the timing belt goes you can do it yourself in a day, where as a jap motor may well have to be engine out.

I have a TD5 and thats pretty serviceable to be honest, but no where near as serviceable as a 200/300 and its more expensive in parts than a 200/300.

Try this place, reasonable cost and a lot of motors in:

Land Rover Defenders quality used land rover 90, 110 and 130 models
 
I do general building on a casual basis as a semi-skilled labourer, I say casual basis as I do it on my days off of my day job when they need an extra set of hands and my disco 1 is fine for what I need, if I went back into groundworks full time or took a position with my mate full time I'd seriously look at ex utilities 110's...

Think I might look into a 110 or 127 then, take one of the rear seats out make a shelf to put my drills in and things then use the back for other stuff.
There was a build thread on here at some point I think we're someone had done that, but I can't find it.

If your gonna put drills etc inside then maybe invest in some window guards as well. ;)
 
Ha yea I will definitely be doing that. Got to see what the old boy says first as he's a little anti land rovers. So I might end up with a jap truck yet.
 
from personal experience

stay away from the mitsy L200 due to crank bearing problems ( if yer towing a lot )
dont bother with the navara coz theyre fekkin heckspensive to fix and when they go wrong they go wrong royally

and as for the ranger the engine is basically a turboed transit banana engine but with an alloy block n head ( verry prone to warping and overheating ) and if you manage to find a good un yer gonna need decent seats as the original ones are hard as fook and will cripple anyone over the age of 30 on long trips ( on a good note though mondeo seats fit them pretty well )

So pretty much there is no such thing as a good 4x4/truck/pickup apart from a land rover but they're still unreliable and uncomfortable. If I had the money I would buy an amarok but I don't have £19K to spare.

Are you on drugs? Get a 110 hardtop van. Two seats-one cubby box/tray -maybe seat if you get an old one and jobs a goodun. No rear seats. Cos its a van. Ie space for drills and **** in the back.

No not on drugs. I clearly stated in an earlier post that I wanted a twin cab, with extra seats.
