Any recommendations for heavy duty 110 springs?

I am after some heavy duty rear springs for my 110. I need to gain at least 6" on the ones I have at the mo. I don't have a self leveler. On my last 110 I had heavy duty standard springs. They were fine height wise but a but harsh. I am toying with the idea of fitting helper springs to my current springs. Has anyone got any suggestions or experience with fitting helpers?

Not a lot to work with here. Harsh ride with standard heavy duty springs could be due to standard shocks running at near full length plus no weight it back.

If you are only needing heavy duty on and off the air based helper springs might be an option. Or adjustable shocks.

Why the gain 6"?

Could be due to age standard springs compressed so you just need new springs.

Looks like you have a varying requirement with more spring assistance at some times to others. I was looking at these air assisted shocks which are available for Defenders somewhere, I've seen them in an a magazine advert and on the Internet the other night but can't find them this morning. But take a look at this extract from Amazon.com

Hi all. The reason for a minimum of a 6" lift is because I am regularly smacking my towbar on the ground at the moment. I fitted HD standard height springs to my 110 van and it immediately gave it a 6"-8" lift. It lifted my towbar clear of the ground for most of the time and dealt well with the weight I carry. With the HD springs fitted on my last 110 I had a 4" drop plate fitted in addition to the dixon bate being on the lowest setting to enable me to tow my caravan.

My current 110 has softer springs being a csw. I do not need the drop plate to tow my caravan AND my dixon and bate is 2 holes above the lowest setting. :eek:

Vinnie110. My landys (past and present) have all weighed in at about 2.5ton with just myself in them. As mine is at the moment I am dragging the towbar all the time when offroading. If I carry passengers in the rear too it catches everything. It also wallows a bit. I liked the ride height of my previous landys setup but was not happy with the harsh ride.

I need the towbar to be their all the time so removing it and fitting it when I am gonna be towing is not an option.

I know what the ride will be like with HD springs but was wondering if assistor springs would be the way to go for the softer option. I have considered the air assisters but I think that they are too likely to get damaged when offroading. Assister springs are more expensive than buying HD springs but if they are the softer option I don't mind paying the extra.

Woodsy. I think air jacks would be the best thing to help with ditch diving.:eek:;):D:D:D

jzcktv. 1200lb rating aint gonna be high enough.:eek: With the 2.5 ton (500kg load) that it is as it sits it would be on the max of the 1200lb already. Any additional passengers or holiday luggage, caravan etc would take it over.

The link was meant as an example not the genuine article, which I assume are heavier duty. If I find the real thing I'll post it, but I think the spring assisters sound a good idea for your situation.

Paddocks do some air assistors but I can't find the feckers at the moment. They are the air bag type ones that go inside the springs. I rekon I would kill a set of them offroad.:eek:

It looks like the spring type assisters might be the way to go then.:)
 
no no no they take way more than that!
they will out perform any other spring on the market...

is that yet another of those comments you make that doesn't have a shred of evidence to support it ?

or do we now all assume that because BoB says so therefore it is ......
 
Another option is to get a removable tow hitch. Not the Dixon Bates type but the ones that have a socket and take different adapters.

Useful ofroad as you can have one with recovery point or NAS hitch on it.

I've had a NAS hitch in the past. They are good. I nead the versatility of an adjustable hitch though. My Nas hitch was WAY too high for my caravan. Adapters for the receiver hitch are expensive too.

It still doesn't get around the fact my springs are soft and make the landy wallow though.

What you commented here has been rumbling round in my head for a bit...

The 1,200lb is additional to the existing suspension rating. If using these types of assistance shocks, the springs you fit should be sized to take your normal load, then these give you a 1,200lb boost on top of the spring rating, around half a metric tonne. Which should cover towing, and equipment.

I'm not saying they are exactly what you need, I was more thinking of them for me. :) Then I can fit standard softer springs for off-roading and pump up for towing.

A mate of mine runs on air assisters on his frontera. He says they are great on road when he is towing. My concern would be with the possibility of damaging em when offroading.:confused:
