Any one done the cam on there V8 ?

Cams on the way out !!! cars only done 73K with full LR service up to last 2 they both done by LR indys, only had the car just over 13 months and it been a bit of a money pit, 3 amogos twice,last time cost £200 to fix, pads all round £85 and garage say front disk on the way out (£150 disk+ pads) just had 72K service =£ 380 and now the cam tapping its tits off, local indy garage want £750 to do the job,says they would need it all week, any one done there own,many years ago i would of jumped in there both feet and just done it but as the years go by it just seems easyer to give the job to some one else....any one any advice ta steve
 
Pair of front discs and pads is only £60 to buy, and less than a couple of hours to fit.

Regarding tappets/lifters, most seem to be lasting longer these days, what engine is it and what oil are you using?

Is it just one rattling or more, and have you had the oil pressure checked?

Estimate on discs and pads seems a tad high but I suppose if they are charging like £50 -£60/hr for labour then perhaps not so unrealistic. Personally I'd do it myself as it is not a difficult job.

As for replacing a cam shaft, shouldn't need more than three days on a DIY basis assuming you have all the necessary parts. I would expect a garage to be able to turn it around in at least 3 days if not two but it'll be expensive; it's the labour charges that get it every time.

Is this your first LR by any chance? I only ask because based on the costs you list I'd say you've got off lightly! Had a cam job done on a 3.9 (90k) back in '02 - £500 by an independant. As with all vehicle ownership it's paying for the labour that cripples you, spares for old LR/RR's are generally quite cheap compared to modern cars.
 
I found that just the difference between 10w40 comma semi sythetic and castrol magnatec 10w40 semi synthetic was missive!

It sounds like a new engine on castrol and it sounded like I needed a new engine on the comma oil.

Try some better oil first!

That's interesting, I've always used a good mineral oil - 20w50 on higher mileage engines or 15w40 if lower (80k ?) either Comma or Partco, both having a higher rating than LR's 'recomended'
 
a litle supprised at the price for any of the work they have quoted you.
i would be inclined to try a very good engine flush and some new oil first.
yes the cams and the followers do wear also the the rocker arms very badly on the d2 for some reason.
if you are going for a new cam why not upgrade for a tweaked cam will be worth doing
