Windscreen wipers problem. They clear the screen fine and work as normal, however when you turn them off they park in the vertical position up and down the screen. A deft bit of timing with your finger when turning them off gets them to park in the normal horizontal position, so no real issue.

However, local MOT stations reckons 'fail'. I've googled but can't find anything other than that if they clear the screen effectively then they pass, if they don't then it's a fail. I'd have thought 'advisory' at worst.

(I know there's something knackered in the auto-park mechanism - wipers were caught and yanked by a gust of wind during recent gales. Means taking the dash apart and probably easiest just to replace the motor, but not got much time available at the moment.)

They become an obstruction in the field of view when parked vertically.
If the tester is a bastard, it's a fail. If they're sensible, it's an advisory.
 
if they park vertically automatically, it might be an issue Id disconnect the park switch so you have to park them manually, that should sort it :)
 
Due to have an MOT done tomorrow and have the same problem with the windscreen wipers not parking properly. Doesn't worry me that much and it's been like it since the last MOT. Fortunately, not an advisory then.....Will hope for the same.
 
Its a fail as its an obstruction, all MOT testers should fail this, it is not an advisory but a clear cut fail. If a tester is passing then you either have a very friendly tester who is willing to do so or someone who is bending the rules as they don't want to do the repairs.

Did you ever work in weston super mare at winter Stoke MoT?

Sounds like our old 110.

When you hit the wipers off they stopped dead in the position they were in - be that, at the bottom or the middle of the screen.

We never had a MOT fail, or as much as an advisory in 9+ years.

Is this what yours do, or is the auto-stop making them stop in the middle - i'm not 100% what you mean?

Nope, always been in Essex, mainly at my garage which is in Dovercourt. I don't MOT my self as I cant dedicate to it (you can not leave the MOT for anything and I have to run the entire business) but I have 4 MOT testers and I have to keep on top of rules and regs myself in order to stay a green light garage...
 
I had a great MOT tester years ago who loved twisting the rules. Used to let my 109 Safari through if I forgot to fill the washers as it had a folding screen, despite teh fact I would have had to unbolt the roof to fold the screen down. :D

From what I recall of changing the motors in older vehicles the self park was in the motor so required Earth, permanent live and switched live.

The switch just pulses the motor to start turning past the dead park point inside. Try checking that you have a permanent live to the motor.
 
Thanks all, we'll see what happens when Mrs McBad takes it for the MOT, it's her car. It's currently at the repairers as someone else drove into the back of it!

(It's the auto-park function that isn't working... If you have the wipers on intermittent they pause vertical on the screen. If on continuous they sweep normally, until you turn them off when they like to park vertical. However, if you get the timing right with the switch you can easily get them to park horizontal at the bottom, so I can't see how that's any sort of problem to anyone...)

the park switch is just on the motor , it can get dislodged , as it is just a push fit , where the wires plug in .
 
Old cars from years ago didn't have self park wipers, I drove an artic truck reg in 1975 and the wipers didn't self park so as long as they don't self park in the middle of the screen ( as yours do) then it will pass.

try removing the arms and allow the wiper motor to self park then refit the arms at the bottom of the screen...simples;)

That won't work ;)
 
mine were parking vertically and I just swapped the plasic cam on the drive sprocket 180 degrees to the opposite side of the sprocket, ten minute job to pull the bugger off and get the drive out.
