Is this a rear wheel bearing? Or part of it, was running g it without the rear diff and half shafts when had a catastrophic failure and this fell off resulting in a wonky drivers rear wheel and the freebie steering itself..

If I'm thinking right, if you have removed the drive shafts from the rear hubs there is nothing to hold the hub to the back plate. The nut that goes on the end of the drive shaft keeps it all together!

Jesus fecking christ, man...you cant run hubs without the driveshafts in place. The end of the driveshaft and the hub nut hold everything in place and keep the bearing tight.

If you want to remove the rear shafts, split the outer CV joints apart so that the end of the shaft still goes through the hub, refit the hub nut and it will be fine.

You will need a new bearing on that side and you will want to be checking the bearing on the other side, as if you have driven it like that for a while, it may well have worn very rapidly as it wasnt tightened up properly.

Hmm seems so I think they as I was under the impression it was pressure fitted and would hold itself together, I'm amazed the wheel is still attached tbh

bearing it self as a unit sit against a step so cant pull through, the hub is just pressed through bearings and with out cv nut holding it tight against the bearing could pull through, if bearing collapses its only the cv holding wheel on , freelander 2 the bearing and hub are one and bearing is just pressed in from the outside apart from a small bolt holding cv instead of a large nut as cv isnt required to hold hub in place only the press fit of bearing holds the wheel on

You were fortunate the wheel didnt come off at speed and catapult the car through some poor sods living room window.

No offence man (And I know now that I have said that you will take offence) but if you dont know what you are doing leave it to someone who does.

lol, we've all taken decissions or non decissions that in hind sight were a tad stupid.

In my younger days, I've driven off without tightening wheel bolts up etc. I can blame that on youth.

Not sure what I can blame for buying a Land Rover at an age when I should have known better though :) And then coming back for more.... and more....

Jesus, this gets worse and worse. A "mechanic" who thinks its ok to drive with the shafts removed is not fit to be working on cars for the public.
