sounds abit odd mate, pistons dont usually come out past top of block,i would imagine it would bend your valves if it was hitting head, not sure though as not trained mechanic, what is the symptoms of it that you think its hitting head..

hi again , apparently on the 300 they are prod of the block and in the Manuel it say the same , just thought someone mite of had the same?

Get a long screwdriver and use it as a stethescope to listen to each of the cylinders. If it's coming from number 4 then my money is on melted piston.

If it's just a light ticking noise then take a look at your brake vacuum pump.

If it's coming from a different cylinder and is very light then check your tappets and also the little c shaped springs that hold em in place as these can sometimes break up causing the tappet to shift and therefore be noisy.

Happenend on my camaro - one of the big end shells must have worn a lot. You can hear a tapping/clicking noise that increases with revs, no power, etc.
Yep...My 19j sounded like a demented typewriter, before it finally went bang!
Still, gave me a reason to convert to 200tdi - might even get it running this week! :D

Just a thought, it's not coming from the water pump is it? My old Range Rover had a cheap **** part pump on and it started making a horrible clacking noise - think one of the impellors was fouling on summat. Never did find out what as it stopped a few days later!

didn't even think of w/pump last owner said a new one was fitted ,
so if i disconnect fan belt that should stop pump running.(i think)
i have taken off vac/pump and fuel/lift pump and that may ed no difference also checked tappets all seem good.:frusty:
