I'm at my wits end with the wiring on this Damned car. Its all arse about face and bodged. I need someone experienced to gimme a helping hand and point me in the right direction.

make yourself a tester with a 12v interior light and 2 long bits of wire attached to ot with small crocodile clips on ends and a douple of stiff pins you can put in if necessary.

then find you ignition lives and mark them... same with permanent.
crocodile clip the earth to earth on chassis or battery... live, you just touch wires with until it lights bulb... do that on anything your unsure about. switch things on and see if it has a live.. permanent or not. if it doesn't find the wire that does and give it one. If its a case of.. is this wire earth... put a crocodile clip to a live you know is live, because you already tested and marked, or the battery.. and your other wire to what you think is earth. if your light comes on... it is.
keep doing that until you have your wiring marked and all your instruments working.
worst that will happen is you blow a fuse or bulb... have a spare.

did all of mine with this and mine was a right bloody mess. just about sorted now.
if you have none standard accessories take them off.. get all standard stuff working as it should first. then if necessary run a new live and earth for accessories or utilize the now marked wires, that are not in use, to run these things but make sure there all fused.

use masking tape and marker pen to mark as you go.. do the job once, not a dozen times.

sarcasm aside, you would think i would have tried that wouldnt you?

half the wires that are labelled in the haynes of having certain functions dont work or work at a severely limited voltage. The wires are heavily corroded, have been cut and spliced several times. In an attempt to avoid oxidized bullet connectors limiting throughput i cut and soldered the connections as per the haynes, checked all fuses and connections. Still no joy.

So...... auto electrician

Hawky:

I did that and managed to get the tail lights and indicators working. Tail lights, fog and reverse i cant sort.

i know it sounded sarcastic, but not meant that way.
i just know that was the only way i could get to bottom of all the issues i had... and litterally NOTHING worked on mine. even the ciggy lighter had a permanent and ignition live.
plugged in sat nav and everything blew up. it was a right mess.
i just did as i suggested and worked my way through.
any wires that were really corroded.. i took out and replaced or by passed safely until all was ok.
i didn't know what level you were at... just suggestions from my experience.

no worries dude.
at what point does the live not work on these. Is it at switch or at lights.. could it simply be the earth?? If you have a live at the lights i'd run a new earth.
I can't even understand wiring diagrams so have to rely on trace and power testing.
Plenty of long wires and a can of beer to help my stress at the time lol

im not sure mate. You know how you get the main feed, that goes into a mini junction that splices off to the near side? Well certain feeds (tail lights for eg) have no juice at all, but the number plate light does, so theyve spliced the number plate light to feed the tail lights aswell..

Guy on the phone says he should be able to rewire the whole tail end and warning lights in a couple of hours so im jus gonna pony up and get it done by a pro.

This motor WILL be at the resto show. Probably gonna bankrupt me gettin it there though.

At least with lektrix sorted out i can bang it in for mot

sounds about right for what i had which is why i ran new fused wires in some cases.
Ive just had alternator refurbished as wasn't charging properly. Put it on and everything charhing fine, drop tested battery.. all good. Had it on 2 days and today put lights and wipers on in bad weather then suddenly fuel gauge playing up, wipers slowed and everything died leaving me completely stranded.
Alternator test again and not giving battery enough juice.. again. GRRRR
so tomorrow off it comes again and back to referbisher.. battery off and test again.
Also if i don't use a kill switch overnight the batterys gone in morning.. so got that to sort but have so far isolated everything other than starter so thats coming off for testin tomorrow aswell.
As i said... am nearly there, but not quite.
But everything works.... now. Just losing that power somewhere so if not starter motor i'm ging to re do main earth strap and as many earth wires as i can.
can't think what else to do beyond that.

Bleedin electrics lol

That place would do great for me. If I could be bothered to go through and do it all. I honestly can't though. The previous owners retardedness has slowly took it out of me. I'd rather him not have repaired it at all than bodged it for me to find

Bring it up to me (Scotland) and I'll rewire it for you better then any LR every came off the production line. Some have commented that Boeing could learn a thing or two from my wiring.
