Another warning light

Started the TD5 this morning, just setting off, and the gears evaporated, got the orange <engine problem> light, no gears would engage, and the tiny red lights by the gear shift were flashing.
SO, I turned the engine off, waited a few minutes, started it again, it all seemed in order, so I drove it back twenty yards to the house. I really don't fancy this happening again if I was on a busy road,

Before I take it to the local man for a diagnostic check- any advice...anybody?
All opinions or offers to buy it gratefully received.

Check and make sure the battery is in GOOD condition and the charging circuit is good.
