Well, I stuck this on Defender2.net, (I wanted to share my numpty Q's around a bit ) had over 140 views and not one response, perhaps theirs don't suffer with rust so no one knows how to treat it.

What can you guys advise?

Whats the best way to deal with surface type rust, where welding isn't required?
Years ago we would rub it down, paint it with some chemical that reacted with rust and made it black. Then it was a couple of coats of red lead before finishing.
Whats the modern way?

Wire brush, then rub it down, paint it with some chemical that reacted with rust and makes it all go blackish, brownish, greyish colour.

Then give it a couple of coats of red lead before you paint it black.

Thats still the right way to do it!

The right way to do it is to ask here first . There are no other LR or defender forums and acknowledging that there are is a bannable offence!

I'm just upgrading from a 97 Disco to an 87 LR90, so there will be loads of numpty type questions and i wanted to share the pi55 taking around a bit.....dont think i'll bother and will stick to you lot having the fun

Phosphoric Acid is the active ingredient in many surface treatments, but it needs care when applying and stabilisation of the surface after washing off.

Unless to get the rust right out, it will return. Water vapour will lay in the rust holes and start again.

For anything that can be got off the vehicle, shot blasting followed by hot Zinc spray is about as good as it gets, the Zinc stops any surface rust and is sacrificial if the paint overcoat gets damaged.

Zinc-rich undercoat is better than red lead primer, as are Alkyd primers.

I have seen some Land Rovers with this on the underside which looks to be way better than waxoil and apparently lasts 10 years.
