Let this be a warning to those thinking of getting a Freelander Petrol.
Get advice first
Get a large warranty
expect large bills
Know that there is a high likelyhood that you will have major problems.
there are some good ones out there tho.

V6 Freelander overheating problem
Help!
Bought a V6 Freelander a couple of weeks ago. It had a new engine fitted 9 000 miles ago and was advertised as having no known mechanical problems.
However, after driving only a couple of miles the engine fan cut in and the header tank was bubbling fiercely, like a kettle boiling. The temperature gauge was reading as normal.
I've tried fitting a new thermostat but the problem is still the same. The pipes and radiator are cold but the block is 100 degrees. The cap blow off pressure is 16psi, but the system pressure is exceeding 19psi.
Any help, advice would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like you have sequential HGF - not unknown on the "K" series engines.
get a sniffer test done to see if combustion gases are in the water. If so take it back or get shot ASAP.
oh - and go for a TD4 next time.

Thanks for advice, my husband bought the car and is gutted that it's turned out to be a complete nightmare. He's contacted the seller, but he doesn't want to know. It's a X reg by the way, new engine was fitted 9000 miles ago, obviously it hasn't solved the problem.
Having read all the threads on here, it's clear that we should have done our research, although my husband did think that the 2.5l engines weren't as prone to problems as the 1.8.
It looks as though it needs a new engine, we have contacted trading standards about the seller, and are contacting land rover (not much hope there but it's only a phone call). Other than that we'll have to sell it with the fault and hope to get some money back.
Cheers for help anyway, think we'll be staying away from landrovers for a while, we did love it but it's been a short-lived romance!!

Well, the seller advertises on ebay, and buys a lot of stuff from auction to sell on. He never becomes the registered owner, so although he doesn't call himself a trader, he is in all but name. That being said, unfortunately we didn't buy through ebay, we had bid on it, but the reserve wasn't met. As the car was only up the road from us we contacted the seller directly and so it was a private deal. We just got caught up in the excitement of having a new car and didn't test drive it as we should have done. It's definitely bitten us on the bum.
