Up **** creek.
Hi, ive just discovered that a change in the law means that if you own a vehicle with tax it MUST have insurance even if kept on private land.

My dilema is I also own a Discovery that is taxed and MOTed but currently not insured.

We have recently bought a golf to replace the disco as our everyday runner as running costs were becoming too high. It is fully road legal as we have transferred our insurance onto the golf.

My plan was to keep the disco TAXed and tested as my off roading toy and only add it for a day onto my golfs insurance as and when i went playing. I thought this would in the long run be cheaper than insuring it for the year when i may only go out in it a few times however I would now run the risk of getting fined.

I cant afford to insure both vehicles all year round so was wondering how I can get around this. One idea I had was to get anyone I know (maybe my old man) to get insured on it as it would be a lot cheaper than me doing it) paying him and then as im fully comp on the VW I can drive it 3rd party .

I know its not ideal but it'll be a cheaper option than me getting insured on it.

This seems a stupid law to me as I imagine there are a few 4X4s out there that are Taxed and tested and are only insured as and when they are needed.

Not sure what to do, any suggestions very welcome as the alternative is to sell the disco.

Cheers:)

Mr Nice, this was news to me but upon using the search engine, you appear to be correct. One way i can see for you to get around this is to SORN the vehicle. Then as and when you need it, insure the vehilce for say a week and then pop to your local post office and tax it for six months. The when your finished, send the tax back. Does seem alot of hard work though. On the plus side, you wont be paying for car tax that you are not using.
Or i have just started a new insurance policy with no no claims to transfer as they are all tied up in another policy for the extortionate sum of £174 fully comp.
Fozziediscovery.

There will be a few user groups screwed by this caravaners who use a 4x4 just for the holidays and transfere the insurance, also amateur road rally cars.
I wonder how a traders policy will cover cars not insured by anyone else would that solve the issue.
If for example a guy had a traders policy for car sales and had 10 motors on the pitch with tax would these now have to be sorn?
I know someone who part owns a limo company and drives his day to day motor on the same policy,

How do you add another car to your Golf's insurance policy for the day?

im with swiftcover, I just click on my bookmark on my PC, enter the reg and start and finish dates and click ok. Takes less than 3 minutes and usually cost about £8 for the day (3rd party).

Cheers, you've revealed one of the very few legitimate uses where the new law adversely affects it. Is there any chance of arranging a continuous policy, but for occasional use (ie limited mileage, to say 750 miles or something)? If it were £80, and you did 10x trips to pay/play sites in the year, it would work out.

Paying and keeping it taxed sucks, though.

This legislation is not in yet and you (mrnice)will know from your other thread that I am addressing it with my MP for what it's worth. The SORN will take care of the insurance issue. The idea of insuring it for a week may not be accepted by the post office (from past hassle I have had). If it is you would of course have to pay a full month's tax for just a week's use and then SORN it again. Having done all that if you wanted to use it again in the same month you would have to pay another full month's tax and again SORN it after use, costing you 2 months tax, for perhaps just a few days use as you cannot claim any part months back.............................crap innit?
