two front covers, whats the difference in years/engines they came from???

i know one has the oil filter facing straight down(twas the original on my old dead engine)

the other has a cranked oil filter bit and it was on the engine i fitted to mine recently. the oil filter catches on the stat (so i took the flange off and now i have oil ****ing out but not sure its from that area although its in the vicinity!!!)

is there a smaller filter i can fit off the cranked type to avoid the stat or should i just change the front cover over??

the one fitted to mine gav which is a 2000 model v8 is the one you have in the bigger picture,i can understand how the one in the smaller picture would catch the thermostat,im wondering if that one in the smaller pic has come from a tvr or morgan, but if it were me i would put the one you originally had fitted back on,that way you know it is right.

the thing is they have bothe come off a v8 rangie!!! where is the stat on the newer rangies? is it behind the rad or somewhere else?

ive ordered bottom end gasket kit so i'm gonna replace the front cover i think, like you say at least then i will know that its the right one for the car but i was woried it wasnt right for the block. i have read that the sumps are not interchangeable with these covers so i will put my other sump on, maybe this is the cause of my oil leaks!!

the sump on mine gav is the alloy one and it has 2 rubber bungs at the rear of it to access the flexplate bolts, but on my mates 97 model v8 it has a thin steel access plate that can be removed to access the flexplate.
