So, seems like my pile of crap 96 2.5TD auto has some more issues.. lol

Was out today and had to stop on a hill behind a truck turning, when I put the foot down to pull off as soon as the revs hit about 4200 there was a FAST tapping noise from the engine aswell as loss of power. As soon as I took my foot off the gas it regained power and ran normal as long as I kept the revs under 4200. Tested it on a straight and same thing, always around 4200 revs and regains power and tapping goes as soon as the revs fall below 4200.

What's going on with this heap of junk?

Another worrying one, cornering at about 50mph (not even a sharp corner) the car seems to glide or wobble or otherwise move from side to side on the road a bit, even happens sometimes on a straight it's as if the car just "glides" left or right.. nearly ended up in the ditch a couple times. This car has been converted to spring suspension.

Any ideas on either or both?

Thanks

Engine, check all the hoses from the turbo, manifold etc. Probably need diagnostics.
Poor directional stability is a feature of the P38 especially if any bushes are worn, drag link ETC. Could also be the shocks not suited to coils and tyre pressures are critical.

Have any links to guides to changing the bushes? Tyre pressures are fine as checked them a couple days ago, springs look fine and never had that issue before.

Will check all hoses and see if I can get it on a diagnostics machine.

Cheers mate.

What pressures are you running? With Goodyear Wranglers, mine was much better with 28psi front and rear. With the Nexens it's fine with the recomended 28 front 34 rear.
I never said a problem with the springs I said shocks.

Under load fuel cut off starts at 4000 RPM to avoid over loading the engine. I suggest you drive it with a little more consideration it is not a bloody racing car.

It's not about racing it, certainly not doing that, that's what rpm it naturally goes before it changes gear up hill. Unless I want to crawl back up to speed?

Regardless not intentionally racing a 2.5L lump.. it shouldn't be doing that anyway, just want to look into what may be causing it?

When I bought this car the previous owner said he changed the gearbox oil so I never gave it a second thought. Checked it today and the level seems very high, I assume it should be between the two holes on the dipstick? As it's about 4 inches above the top hole..

Would that be causing any of my issues re: scrubbing noise on turn, strange gliding while driving & engine tapping/power loss at HIGH rpm

Thanks

Well sort of, still have all those issues i listed :(

One of the main ones for me is the tapping/power loss over 4200 rpm. Yeah I know you don't need to go over but that's not the point and not a great selling point if I ever wish to move it on.
