Another 200tdi conversion question!

HI All, just joined this forum so excuse me if this has been discussed!!

I have a LWB series 3 safari which I am contemplating converting to a 200tdi. Currently running with a 2.5 petrol running on LPG, which is rubbish as you get on a hill and old men on push bikes overtake you!

I know I will get more torque from a diesel but do I need to go to the hassle of fitting the turbo? Not bothered about top speed just need better fuel economy and not to have to drop through all the gears to keep it moving. I had planed on adding a higher ratio transfer box and do away with the overdrive.

Also the bigger question is anyone done this conversion and wished they hadn't through to much noise?

seen as you have an lpg system ie tanks and lines. I would stick in a v8.

fitting the turbo is not really much hassle. you should check out glencoyne engineering, all the answers about fitting the 200tdi without a turbo are on there.

Thanks for the reply but LPG is difficult to buy where I live, I end up driving a long way around to fill up and is part of the reason to remove the LPG setup.

Its more about the level of noise I guess!

(as if we really need speedos in cars eh ..LOL )
then arguing about lights in speedos..
(as if we really needs speedos that light so we can see them "if" we needed them in the first place).. LOL

200tdi into a 109 should be pretty straight forward imo.

I will be converting my 109 in the next month or so.

The glyncoyne website is very good will be using that to help me with my conversion. Although I honestly can't see the point in fitting one without the turbo so I will be fitting it.

I do know that fitting the turbo on a 109 is more difficult than if you were fitting to an 88, mainly due to the chassis rails differing.
But there are ways round this.
1. Fit a turbo and manifold from a defender 200tdi. (good luck finding one for sensible money)
Or
2. Scallop a piece out of the chassis and clock the disco turbo. (the option I'm using)

I have heard you may be able to fit a turbo and manifold from a 300tdi to a 200tdi but not 100% sure. Someone with more knowledge can correct me on that one.

As for noise levels. I already have a diesel so trying to have a conversation at 40mph+ is impossible but will be soundproofing with some rubber stable matting at the same time as the conversion.

Think you need the 300 manifold as well

I'd seriously reconsider hacking the chassis about. The car will have to go for a BIVA and an otherwise stock series 3 won't be able to pass BIVA without a lot of modifications.

Why's that? I'm only cutting out a piece roughly 2 inches wide and an inch deep into one side of the chassis rail to accommodate the turbo....:confused:

thats bull, no one puts them through things like that they just send an engineers report and receipt off with the V5 and it comes back changed

never seen or heard anyone on here doing an SVA or this new BIVA test on engine swaps
