That's just the law. Chassis must remain totally unmodified otherwise you'd be driving around in an incorrectly registered and therefore illegal car.

You can modify the chassis if you want to, but like I said, if you do that, to stay legal it'd need to be taken for a BIVA test.

Once you've armed yourself with the right information it's up to you what you do from that point. Ultimately folk are free to do what they like aren't they?
If I were dropping a lot of money into a project I'd want to find out what the law says I can and can't do first rather than end up in the position where you end up with a very expensive ornament that you can't legally drive on the road. Or, worse, be involved in an RTA, end up with the car getting inspected and getting yourself dragged through the courts system.

Of course if you can get a cover letter from a recognised club or Land Rover themselves which cites such a mod as a coeval modification you could then carry out such a modification, submit it for BIVA along with the supporting paperwork that I mentioned and then retain the cars identity post test.

The long and short of it is if you start notching a chassis and drive the vehicle on the road without putting the vehicle through (and passing!) a BIVA test you're breaking the law. I hope you or anyone else doesn't take this the wrong way. I'm certainly not telling anyone what to do - just stating the facts to help folk make an informed choice before picking up the tools.
