I am just back from a day away in my recently repair beastie, visiting reli's 200 mile covered and some real scares :eek:

I got a frightening wobble while trying to overtake on the motorway at 50-60 mph, stopped immediately and checked for loose wheels etc all appeared well.

I later noticed a positive camber and tyre ware to match on my near side front, tyre has only covered 350-ish miles since put on the day after i bought it (two 5mm tread partworns supplied by the previous owner)

also a screech from tyres cornering to the left?

Is the camber easy enough to put right on these cars?

Also what mpg would be considered good at 70mph I was about 22 but dropping to 60mph i managed to get it up to 27.
 
I could be wrong, but I don't think the camber is adjustable on the P38....

The Hub pivots on a swivel housing bolted to the axle casing - so the camber is set by this housing bolted to the axle....

I could be confusing it with the Classic - which used a similar system using a swivel housing and Chrome Ball bolted to the axle casing, the camber wasn't adjustable on that either.

Do you have the RAVE manuals, they are invaluable to the P38 owner....

Sudden vibration at 50 to 60 might be the loss of a wheel balance weight, mine vibrates at this speed but only on cold tyres for a minute, not sure about the rest, best get it checked out

Could be a swivel gone.
If it's a V8 that fuel consumption is miraculous, if it's a diesel, about normal:)

the car handles well with no major issues, maybe a very slight wander to the near side, steering wheel is off centre to the right by a small amount.

if it stays dry today I'll try to check it over more fully, it had a second hand front axle put on around april this year so maybe something wrong there.
 
Well I have just been out for a closer look, and I am none the wiser it appears to me that the worst side (near) is wearing to the out side but drivers side is wearing to the inside :confused:

The ball joint's look and feel OK but I'm no expert and I can feel no play in the wheel wheel jacked clear. and of course they are not expensive so replacing would do no harm, however are any of you aware of anything that may cause the wear on opposite sides like this.

as I have said the car drives very well apart from the symptoms mentioned.

The squeal from tyres on slow sharp turns.
the uneven tyre wear
and of course that SCARY wobble which has happened once at the scary level but a couple of times to a lesser degree, usually triggered by a bump or bad road surface.

Your tracking could of course be out , obviously you have jacked both wheels and pulled and pushed the wheels in and out as firmly as possible for signs of play, also try jacking one wheel at a time just enough to fit a strong tyre lever ( best ) or bar and try lifting upwards slightly to feel for play in ball joints, also try checking all radius arm bushes ect. Only if really worn you can feel with your hands lever with bars for best results to feel for play if no play I would suggest at above for cheapest option tracking , for tyre wear and balance for vibration . I was in a car park and my tyres screech too when turning tight circle I have no tyre wear but one tyre could be low on air or just the multi car park smooth floor

Put a spirit level on a wheel rim and jack one or other side up until that wheel is absolutely vertically plumb. Then with jack still in place check other wheel both should be absolutely vertical. Bet your ball joints are knackered. Readings will change as weight is put on or taken off ball joints. They are spring loaded so it is virtually impossible to detect play by hand. You need a bar on them.
 
Cheers Gents I did try them with a crow bar but only the near side, so tomorrow I'll be more thorough and check all joints and bushes on both sides. I am currently looking for a pair of tyres for the front and I'll replace them at the same time as getting the alignment done, but having just spent 1080 on the FIP I will need to wait til payday :eek:

I thought I was buying a good one too with all the work thats been done already, more like the previous owner got fed up with the bills and back heeled it :mad:
 
Sorry guys, not been on here for a while but car is getting better all the time.

it turned out to be the radius arm bushes and wheel alignment (out by 3°) also there were no spiggot rings in the 19" wheels :eek:

But hey onwards we go (minding the wallet as we go) :D
 
Omg he was surely robbed, I bought a pair for less than 20 quid and turned out I didn't need them, that's a whole heap of labour charges:eek:.

It's a lot of work time to get them out brakes shafts ect ect realigning and a new drak link from wheel to wheel. Was £71 quid alone, he damaged it playing over the farm
For me I think it's one of the worst jobs on the rr as any one can take one out and put it back, but if you don't line it up it's will cost you more than a seal and ball joint !!
