As usual last minute rush to get a windsurf trailer up and running and give the rangie an oil change. Well the nice LED lights id purchased for the trailer were a crock of snitzel and didnt work at all. This is 7 at night . So 2 hour later lights from an old trailer board were put on. Its now 9pm We are setting off at the crack of dawn so i started the oil change. Crawled under rangie and ran my fingers down the sump and found the 17mm nut and nice empty oil cature underneath. Started to undo the nut and oil started flying everywhere. Id undone the banjo at the back of the sump. Oil all over the drive and 2 lost banjo washers. After another 1/2 hour of trying to find copper washers for this it was all done up fine. Filter changed. I had been putting mobil 1 in 0w40 , but thought id try castrol edge 5w30. All went well with the filling but as soon as i started it up tick over would not go down 1000 revs. Took for a test drive the same 1000 revs tickover At this point i thought id damaged the breather pipes at the top thus letting in air through these. So not only was it the hottest day it was the same at night and i had a terrible night thinking what a wally i was. Trailer hooked up off we went and me hoping im not going to smell burning oil. Anyway to my amazement the revs dropped to normal 750 revs on tickover. But now i have another problem. Ive never had any problems with the vanos rattle on start up. But now when cold it sounds like a bag of spanners for about 3 secs. No problem after this all sounds smooth and great. Will this be the norm now or will it subside as the new oil takes over, or will it always be like this.

Hmm crystal ball doesn't have a clue?!

In all seriousness Vanos failure usually starts with a rattle and progresses if it gets advanced it's usually accompanied with a code, timing over/under advanced is the one it kicks up most of the time.

How is the oil picked up from the sump? Sounds like no suck to pull the oil until engine has run a few seconds?

I'd take the sump off and have a look before damage occurs higher up.

Did you fill up the oil filter/housing, leave it go down, then top up til it’s full before replacing cap. Stops your engine running dry for first bit particularly turbo

I’d drop the w30 oil and put what ever was in there originally. Vanos gets sticky and plays up slowly over time, don’t think it likes your oil and will hopefully be fine after. (also check owners manual for recommended viscositys and wether you should be using synthetic/semi).
