:) Hello to all you fellow range rover owners, im looking for some advice really. Myself and my husband are contemplating on buying a range rover vogue and im after a little info really as we have never owned a 4x4 before.
I would like to know are they as expensive as everyone seems to say they are to run and is the servicing and parts expensive.
Sorry to sound a bit thick but am looking to maybe purchase one for my hubbies 40th bday and obviously need to try and find out enough info about the lovely vehicles.
Is the tax the same price as ya everyday car or are they alot more expensive.
I would appreciate any info you can offer me and soooo appreciate your help and patience...!!!

Not too expensive if you are a competant DIY mechanic:eek::eek:

Go for diesel, more reliable and much more economical.:D

Definately go for a well looked after one with as few owners as possible and a detailed service history although that will not guarantee reliability:(

No road tax here in France, pity you poor buggers in the over taxed UK:D:D:D
 
As said DIY makes them alot cheaper to run and parts are readily available from many sources and I've found parts no more of a rip off than any car on the road these days (thats not to say some of them are not expensive)

Air suspension, blend motors and heater o-rings will probably give you grief at some stage.

I travalled 200 miles to get mine, thought I was mad at the time but it had been maintained regardless of cost and I have reeped the rewards of mainly trouble free motoring (excluding recent head gasket issue)

Tax is £200 on pre 2001 models a bit higher on newer ones.

I've never regretted getting mine and sometimes when I'm cruising down the motorway I still can't believe I'm in a 9 year old motor worth diddly squat, it (nearly) always puts a smile on my face.
 
They are no worse than any other 4x4 or car to that matter. Like any car if you take it to a main dealer it will cost a fortune. If you can find a good independant it wont.

Go for diesel, more reliable and much more economical.

Go for a 4.6 with a gas conversion. You will get the equivilant of 30 Mpg around town and the lovely smoothness and V8 rumble. Go for a later model with the "Thor" engine - this can be identified by what looks like a bunch of bananas on top of the engine. Make sure you get a good service history.

It all depends on what you are intending to pay, and so what model & year you are looking at.
I'm impressed that several people have offered advice without knowing if you are looking at spending £700 on an early 1983 Vogue or £70000 on a brand new one!

If your spending 70 grand on a birthday present for your other half, you wouldn't be here asking if you can afford to run it......your'd be trying to cover up a large hole in the bank account.........:eek:
 
i sincerly hope you are the 20 yr old blonde aupair-that-ran-off-with-the-dad or your 'hubby' has some explaining to do about asking his mrs to go get info on cars for him!!!

that'd be like me selecting a bloody hoover!

you need to be more specific with budget and year that you want!

Hahahah...............i can assure you i am the Mrs her indoors and im the one that cant contain my excitement so whilst my hubby was working yesterday i scoured the net and found this forum which i thought why not no time like the present to post a thread....!!
To be honest im not looking to spend the earth im lookin up to about 5 grand. I guess it doesnt specifically have to be a vogue one gentleman said a hse well im open to offers as ive just started to read up on them and liked the look of the vogue.

Blondace, if you stated your rough location theres always a possiblity that one of the members might know of a decent vehicle that maybe on the market or soon coming on the market. Theres also a possible chance that a member might offer to give said vehicle the once over so to speak.

Also you should be aware of a couple of other facts:

1. Vehicles built from 2001 will soon have higher road tax, than earlier models you'll have to check the DLVA web site for more details (or maybe someone else could post the exact dates/details).

2. P38 face lift models can have the front/rear lights changed and wing vents added to look like a slightly later model, so a vehicle may seem a bargain but isn't, so re-search a model/month/year before parting with the cash.

I run a 95 model so am not up on the exact details of the above, maybe one of the other could advise you further.

I think its March 2001 when the Road Tax was calculated differently. it goes on CO2 emmsion rather than the engine size.

The cars after 1999 have alot of the updates on them which some of the earlier ones suffered problems with.

The Vouge replaced the HSE for the last few years of the P38 though i think there was a crossover period. The basic spec is the same. When I was looking the only thing I could see that was different was the rear arm rest had a cup holder in.

The last few years 2000 > the spec was higher, special editions appeared to sell the last models before it was replaced.

The best model year ( in my opinon ) is between 99 > 01

First question is petrol or diesel. If economy is vital, get a diesel and chip it (but NOT a manual). If not, get a petrol. Much much more civilised and how a Range Rover should be and, to be honest, I don't think there's vast amounts in it unless you're doing a mega mileage each year. The difference in refinement between a diesel and petrol is chalk and cheese. I had a manual diesel for a few years and now have a petrol. I wouldn't have another diesel again (or manual). (Even the new shape are noisy).
Go for the highest spec you can. I was fortunate last year when I bought a Vogue 50. This was made in 1998. They only made 100 of them but the main thing about it (apart from all the goodies it has) is the colour. It's a sort of 'flip' paint where in one light it's blue and in another light it's a beautiful shade of green. See it once (in the right light) and you'll fall in love with it.
They're fabulous vehicles that give an inordinate amount of pleasure to drive. They go wrong like anything else of course but they are fixable. Complicated but fixable. Drive one and you'll be smitten. Just don't buy a manual. The auto is so, so superior.
Good luck with your search and don't buy the first one you see unless you're VERY VERY sure.

I'm a female Rangie owner and have had a 99 Vogue for 6 years now. Best advice I can give prospective female buyers is to read up as much as possible on the model/s you think you may want, and get a knowledgeable person - maybe someone from the forum who lives up your way? to go an sound out the prospective buy with you. Try to buy a later model - 99-2001 - as they are all old now, but 14 year old cars of this nature with complicated electronics are 5 years older than the newest P38s and more and more problems are likely to surface with age and just wearing out.
Ask lots of questions and check out all the potential nightmare areas - read some threads and make a check list before you go shopping!!!
If its not convincing, walk away. They are great cars, but you need to look about for the right one and not get landed with a heap of scrap that someone has offloaded onto a gullible buyer!!! Buy with your head and not your heart!!!

Why not chip a manual?
Sorry. Bad english! I meant don't buy a manual, not chip one. Personnal opinion of course. Had one for a few years and needed one rebuild and then a reconn box (which I should have had in the first place). I just think they don't suit the vehicle and the autos are far better.
