Hi all I'm new to this forum, I like to talk about Land Rovers, but at the moment I have a problem with the alternator warning light, I started my 300 tdi yesterday and the light wouldnt go out, so I checked out the wiring and that seems OK, I measured the battery voltage cold was about 12.5v, started the engine revved to 2500 and the reading went to over 14v so it reads Ok when I measured the battery with the engine off it read 13.5v, is ther a fuse that could have gone or a short or is the battery suspect, the rev counter also works ok any help would be appreciated. Thanks guy's.

did you check the earths, ? engine to chassis brades first,

does the light go out when yer revving it hard ?

im havin the same trouble with me 90

no output from alternator, just battery voltage so im replacing the alt,

the battery being dead wont affect the lightm, just the alt , its a chraging light more than a batter state indication

an easy check is stick a jump lead from the engine hoist point to the - terminal of the battery , if the light goes out its a bad earth,.

check the post with the three cables bolted on the back of the starter motor , a dirty or bad connection there will loose voltage too

The voltages you have described are OK , infact very similar to mine with a new alternator . I actually get 14 Volts when the engine is at idle speed . What do you get at idle speed as the warning light should go out at this speed ? I quite sure that as engine speed increases you actually get an increase in current and the volatge stays the same . Tried all the cures mentioned, put a jump led from earth on the battery to the engine no joy, put a clip on ammeter on output shot up to max it only goes up to 30 amps, rev counter works ok removed white and black wire from the alternator rev counter stopped put it back all ok, measured small brown lead from the alt and got 7 volts, took the battery of done a discharge check all ok, checked the big 100 amp fuse in the fuse box in engine bay its ok, is there a relay that turns the light off when it gets a voltage from the alt or a fuse I havnt checked yet, the light stops on bright it do'esnt dim when the engne is revved,, I will appreciate any help guys,

if yer only getting battery voltage 12.5 or under from the alt , to earth , its the alt thas gone,

check if it has any brakes in the wiring from the alt to starter / dash , it sounds like the diodes have fryed in yer alt, the rear diode pack is £7 upwards depending and the actual diodes are 18p :) but they are a ballache to replace on ther own , thas all they do on a recon ,
if the light stays on full and dont dip the alts not putting any charge n the battery , if yer kno any one with a spare alt , try it :)

just saw this thread and now very confused.. my alt light comes on when I put the key on then goes out as expected when I start the motor.. but my battery keeps dying and my rev counter is intermittent.. how comes my light never comes on????

coz the alt end of the wire has to be at 0V for it to come on. Simply you have a basic electrical circuit ........ battery, thru warning light to earth on alternator. when yu turn on the ignition the light comes on, when the alt fires up the volts increase and the bulb no longer has 12volts across it, and the light goes out. You need to get yo alternator tested.

yu can check the voltage output - shud be 14.7. But yu cant check current (Amps) output easily and yu cant check ripple easily either. Halfrauds can - but it means driving yo motor to them - else its an automotive sparky .

its probly the most useless place iv been, thats all :)

over priced compared to a lot of places i deal with , they cant be arsed with the simplest things, just wanna sell me a magic tree air freshener. amd a posh sterio, both of wich i dont want

and yer right i aint been to basingstoke,

The problem with Halfords, just like B&Q, Focus, Wickes etc etc is that it is 'dumbed down' for the general public. Most people only want a smelly tree and a stereo with horses running across the screen.. they don't mind paying £25 for a bit of hose knowing it will be exactly the right size for their washer jets, unaware that the hose is 10p a metre if you are willing to cut it yourself.. because of this the staff they employee must only reach a minimum standard of knowledge and so many will only ever reach that level.. so depending on the store you go to or the day of the week you will probably be frustrated by them if you want more than the basic pre-packed corporate advice and component exchange products.

That being said I've had good advice in B&Q being there on the right day and asking the right person, no reason to assume that wouldn't happen in a Halfrauds as well... never to me so far though :)

oi.. I've first hand knowledge of your advice MHM to my benefit and I know customers visiting your store the days you are working will be well looked after.. surely you have to admit though that there are many of your colleagues whose knowledge falls well short of your own.

lol
:praise:

Its a typical retail organisation - they pay **** money..............

yu pay peanuts.............

but I do know that some of the "simple" stuff aint as simple as peeps think. I have had a few surprises there. Said it before - yu try changing a headlight bulb on an 09 Corsa - 2 hours!!!
There aint nuffink so queer as folk - some of the public are exteemely stupid anorl. I think I said it before, but I had some woman drive from Winchester to Basingstoke for some oil - coz the oil light was on (on a 59 plate Audi R8) - and it wouldnt be the first peep to fill - and i mean FILL!! the engine with oil .
