alternator upgrade

HI All
I have just brought a britpart alternator 100amp kit you get with it a thick red lead am I right in saying this lead goes from the new alternator to the starter motor? I have a defender 90 200tdi also with the existing alternator leads do I cut the original connector off and crimp some ring connectors on. how do I get to the starter motor if I need to make the connection and looking at the starter motor I think the red and white cable has come off the solenoid is that easy to put back on.
all advise would be appreciated and photo's if possible.

The igniter wire will push back onto the spade connection, the new red wire will be an upgrade from the standard 45 amp and yes goes to the starter motor ring, it's a bit tight but you should be able to get to it, don't touch the chassis rails whilst undoing the nut on the starter... If your new lead has no connectors on it I'd drop a couple of ring connectors on it

Disconnect the battery before you start working near the starter positive connection - it's not fused and there's a fair chance you'll damage something/yourself if you accidentially short it out.

Well maybe as you made no mention of it in your initial post?
Plus of course you may not know the guy doing the job and as hes asking such basic questions its well worth mentioning.

I genuinely didn't think of removing the positive of the battery, daft of me I know. The amount of times I caught the chassis or something daft down there. You learn something every day I guess lol

I learnt the hard way years ago and still have the 13mm and 17mm spanners with burnt bits missing!

I've seen what 200amps at 50v can do - tools will literally explode!

I've got a belting pair of side cutters with a hole blown through the blades. I keep them in my electrical/cutters drawer in my tools box as a reminder to double check stuff is dead
