HI all
i have a defender 90 TD 1988 and i was wondering if there was anyway of covering or protecting the alternator up? i have gone thru 3 alternators now once they get wet or covered in mud they pack up its annoying as everytime it usualy packs up when your stuck in the middle of nowhere, my mate has a discovery and he goes thru the exact same places i do and he never has any problems and my alternator is situated higher up?? has anyone got any ideas? can you buy a glove like protector bag to cover it in? i heard some people say spray some water repellent everywhere but i cant see that having any effect on mud a sludge:D

I would not cover the alternator in WD40 for two reasons. I knew of someone who had a little problem with a diesel fountain (diesel line came apart and it sort of soaked the alternator which was hot at the time).

Once they fixed the leak they could smell diesel vapour, it was coming from the alternator. It then decided to become a jet engine!

Now diesel is heavier that WD40 and it caught fire so if you fill it with kero propelled by propane it could cause issues.

Thats not to say that every alternator you spray will burst into flames but its worth a thought that it COULD cause a fire.

I would be more inclined to use non flammable silicone spray.

Also, its NOT a lubricant, it was designed for hinges and stopping grass sticking to lawnmowers, it eats grease, its more a solvent.

It will not do the alternator any good.

I dont think he meant to say use it as a lubricant, more of the fact that it disperses water

Doesn't really matter when its being used for it doesn't belong in there.

I was throwing the lubricant bit in more to remind everyone that it should not be used as such.

thanks guys it dont have a heat shield on the back but i have 2 spare alternators now so i will take them with me lol just in case..
