Got the engine back together, filled up with coolant etc

did a quick fault code scan, came up with throttle position sensor, misfire on cylinder 3 & low fuel. cleared the codes (hadn't started the engine at this time)

Turned the key, started immediately, however horrendous screeching noise which sounded like a belt. Turned it off.

It would appear that the alternator has seized,

Took the alternator off and it wouldn't turn, put some grips on it and managed to turn it, it now turns by hand but does seem quite tight..

Any ideas??

Cheers

Simon

Simon, Golden rule is, if its supposed to turn freely then strip down or get advice. It could be the brush gear or something like a washer has got into the rotor on the alternator and hence screwed it.

I had the same thing with an Escort diesel. Seized after a month of sitting in -20c in Latvia. It was seized solid. Took it off, managed to get it free by using grips, lubed it up, tested it and used it for a further 6 months, including driving it back to the UK.

Then the main diesel pump failed so I sold it to a guy to transported it to Nigeria !!!

Wacked the pulley nut with an impact driver, I was intending to remove the nut to take it apart and have a nose inside......

Bingo.... pulley now spins nice and freely, never did get the nut undone to find out what was actually going on

So I now have a spare alternator
