Hi Guy's and Gal's,

I've had a problem on my series IIA. The charging light came on and I presumed it was probably worn brushes in the alternator. I was halfway through dismantling it when I noticed that the main cable back to the battery had a corroded connector. Cleaned it all up and the battery is now charging, approx 14v when engine idling and goes up to around 20v when I rev the engine. However the red charging lamp is still on. Is this a faulty voltage regulator. I believe the lamp is connected to the regulator.

Cheers

If EVER your alternator makes 20 volts - switch OFF!
Even 15 volts is too much.
The alternator should be set to a nomila 13.8 volts, but most will reach 14v

20 volts into a 6-cell lead acid battery will produce clouds of explosive gases, a perfect mix of hydrogen and oxygen, and if it goes off there will be a BIG BANG, and a gallon of concentrated sulphuric acid sprayed all over your car, and your battery will be in a million bits.

try an recon alternator very soon.

Thanks for the advice CharlesY, I will certainly not drive it until the problem is fixed!

I forgot to say earlier it's a Daihatsu 2.8TD engine with an old style japenese voltage regulator (relay type). The model is AVR583-12v.
I suspect it might be this at fault rather than the alternator, since it controls the field winding and hence the voltage. It could also be wiring judging by the way it's beendonebythelast bodger owned the car!

Ditch that alternator and fit a cheapo Lucas instead.
Easy to wire in.

Slitties were crazy about regulators, and I agree with you that the regulator is probably the problem.

Bloody slitties .... don't ya just love going slow in front of them? Nearly as much as pulling them out of muddy fields!
