I have a problem with a flat battery when the Disco 300tdi is left overnight....I got a friend to put a meter on the battery when it was ticking over and it was showing as 16-17 volts going in so I think the alternator is not as it should be and shorting out when the engine is stopped ....someone mentioned that it could be the regulator with a diode that was shorting...my question is ....is there a separate regulator or is it inside the alternator?I believe it is cheaper to replace a regulator but if it's inside the alternator then a new alternator would be the way to go.....Many thanks in advance for help...

Regulator/diode pack located inside the rear of the alternator and can be replaced and a lot cheaper to replace DIY than a new/refurb alternator would be. But then if you have a original alternator the bearings may be worn, but take it apart and have a look see it's up to you and the £££ :)

Thank you very much for the suggestion....I think I'll try replacing that first and have a general look when it's off....if it is the original alternator and as it's done 200k+ it seems likely it's got to its best before date...

That's the best idea... just remove the end cover, how easy it is depends on how the wires are crimped or fused with silver solder type of stuff, as for the bearing just look for any play just like any bearing but if it was spinning ok it still is as a faulty regulator pack will have no bearing on that :)

You will have to search the www for the correct pack as it not a listed LR part.
