Merry New Year everyone.

I am currently running Goodyear Wrangler on my Discovery 1997 300 TDI Auto, but they seem to wear quite quickly and do not seem to offer great traction on grass. I had the embarrassment of having our caravan towed off the pitch by a tractor because the tyres were too clogged with mud. I have read that the BF Goodrich All Terrain have legendary wear capacity and are exceptionally good off road. That said, what reduction in mpg can I expect as I normally average between 25-26 per gallon.

Kind regards and thanks.

Hi Marc, BF Goodrich AT's are probably the best tyres you could fit on a Disco I, unless they are too much for your pockets in which case go for General AT²'s which are slightly cheaper.

Re mpg they should make very little difference.

Many thanks for the very quick responses. Much appreciated. I think I will go the for the BF Goodrich A/T's as it will give the extra confidence when greenlaning with the caravan. I should probably leave it at home.

One point I neglected to ask is whether there is much more road noise with the A/T's.

Kind regards

i have bf goodrich a/t on my disco 1 300 tdi auto bloody ace matey no difference in mpg that ive noticed and the road noise isnt bad at all they are bit more expensive than other a/t tyres but you get what you pay for and they last for for ages i had coopers for a while and sacked them for bf

Only a very small increase in noise - nothing to be concerned about.

BFG and General grabber AT2's are very similar tread pattern
do a search on the forum, this type of question has been raised many a time before and you can get everones opinion

I have AT2's and I love them, mud, snow nothing seems to stop them, but as mentioned wet grass will cause a problem for any tyres

MPG should not suffer too much, can't comment on the comparison as I went to 245/70 16's largest tyre with no body mods so radius changed the MPG more

Now that would be interesting to see. :D

I have BFG A/Ts on my 94 300Tdi and they are amazing. I've now done 22k on them and they still have the best part of 7mm tread. Last August I went to a horse event and ended up in torrential rain and having to tow a box with horse on board out of a complete swamp. I made sure I was in low gears and in diff lock before attempting it, but I was staggered at how easily it seemed to drag me to hard ground. For this reason I would definitely sing the praises of BFGs. However, I may have faced difficulties if I'd lost momentum and I would agree with what has been said in other posts that wet grass can get the better of any tyre. My saving grace was that I had copious amounts of mud thrown into the mix.

i use the insa tryes product with the same pattern as at2 half the price last about 75% as well so good all round also the compund is softer so performance in the wet is slightly better paddock supply them £57=00 each.

Many thanks to all for the advice. I recently had a problem with one of the front tyres (which is apparantly common with the Wranglers) so purchased a new set of BF Goodrich A/T's. They look excellent (is it wrong to have the white lettering on the outside) handle really well, are cheaper than the goodyear's and much less than the low profile tyres on my wife's little Citroen. In addition, they do not sound any louder and should last a long time.

They are obviously a hard compound tyre, but should the tyre pressure(s) be the same as the manual says; 26 front and 34 rear?

Kind regards

Marc

Bf at2 iffy in wet getting 28.4mpg in a td5 disco, do quite well off road considering the cost, would recommend, they are a hard compound tyre, so the colder it gets the worse they get.

BFG AT's, 31 x 10.5 R15's on 8j rims. Getting anywhere between 350 to 450 miles per tankfull ... depends on whether I'm towing, solo, or booting it!

Great tyres, third set .. sell old ones off at 25k miles, last set (4 on rims) got me £250 on ebay ... ;)

I would also think about the new bfg MUDs. I've just got a set they are very quiet on the road and I'm not realy getting any less mpg on the 235 MUDs than I did on 205 ats. Off road the are in a class of there own I've been through a foot of snow up hill and not had to use the diff lock. Ten out of ten.
Mudynaty.

I'm on BFG AT's at the mo, and get 30mpg from my 300tdi, the only time I've had problem s was this last weekend when I couldnt get up a wet grassy bank with a sideslope ( mind you I dont think the 11/2 ton trailor helped).

mind you it justified my up to yet bumper ornament

I had Goodrich AT's on my TD5 Defender and when I bought an '03 Discovery II, I wanted them again, but they didn't do the right size for the 19" rims I have. Instead I bought the Grabber AT2s. They are good. They don't wear quite as well and at first I noticed that they were a bit noisier but I don't seem to notice it now - if you get them you won't be dissapointed, but......
Given the choice I'd go for the Goodrich, they're worth the extra few quid.
