hi All
It time to change my front tyres on my d2, I have replaced the rears with General grabber AT's and think they are great.........but general have yet again changed the tread pattern and now call them the AT 3 (no I don't understand why they have gone AT-AT2 back to AT and now AT3 either!)
To me the new pattern looks far to road based for me, I don't do huge amounts of off roading but every now and then I do need something more aggressive.

Any suggestions on alternatives or reviews on the AT3 would be much appreciated, I'm on 255 55 r18 and need speed rating H

Don't like the idea of really cheapo tyre nor am I willing to pay the eye watering B F Goodrich price tag

Thanks

Thanks for your reply, just googled team and they look perfect but unfortunately the speed rating isn't high enough.
I completely agree that I really want to match rear and fronts, even more annoying as my grabbers are only a year old!

I struggle to believe the speed rating isn't suitable. They are OEM fitment in the USA on some Jeeps. How fast are you planning on going?

I ran BFG AT's on my D1 for 75000 miles, changing them at 25000 whilst they still had reasonably deep tread, looked good and got £250 minimum for a set of four on ebay .. which makes them actually very reasonably priced .. ;)

In all fairness, the recommended tyres for the D2 are speed rated as "H" (130 mph), but it is a Discovery we're talking about and most would be hard pushed these days to see the other side of the ton, apart from which anything over 70 mph is unlawful. It becomes illegal if or when you get caught.

daft question

would it affect the ins in any way if the correct speed rated tyres are not fitted , know u must always inform them if u change the size that arnt as per manufacturers recommendations

think mine are speed rating 111T , 118 mph,

bought a set of 4 x cooper at/3 on , really pleased with them,

That appears to be a question that only your insurance company can answer, I looked at this a while ago and I could not find a definitive answer except call your insurance company. Some say it does , others say it does not.....

Cheers

The interesting thing would be to get and answer from LR why they recommended H rating tyres in the documents for a vehicle which has R as top speed:confused:

I think if you were in an accident, questions might be asked if you didn't have the right rated tyres. It might not invalidate insurance altogether, but they might reduce their liability to minimum legal cover.

There is also a possibility of charges under construction and use regs, or maybe even driving without undue care, etc.

Ask a traffic cop if you meet one, they might be more exact.

cheers as always guys

just checked my top end speed and is rated ar 112mph , know the sidewall rating of 111 is correct

but as mentioned best to always chexk with ins or ask a traffic coppper

do on occasion meet up with a police dog unit when i'm walking my dogs and know one of them was a former traffic cop, will pick his brains the next time i see him

What do you mean the sidewall rating of 111 is correct?

So what does your owners manual state for tyre speed rating?

Cheers

from the manual is says the load rating should be 111 , load in kg = 1090 which my new tyres are

it states in my manual they should be H rated, but mine are T rated rated

don't know if it makes any difference because they are M & S tyres

running 235/70/17

just double checked and the speed rating for T is 118mph , yet they still specify in the owners manual H

my top speed is 112mph

blimey i get confused , know the speed rating also inc things like braking , cornering etc

got me really worried now

Maybe they just like you to buy expensive stuff?

AFAIK, if the tyres are rated for more than the stated top speed of yer motor, No worries.

You don't needn't tyres for the speed of the vehicle. You just can't or shouldn't exceed the tyres rated speed. How else do you think people run remould mud terrains on anything otherwise.

Also not all vehicles have a declared top speed.
