Hello Everyone, i am just a rookie when it comes to Landy's, Having just got myself a Disco 300tdi, What a motor, have already started the basics on her, like oil levels in axles, gear boxes etc etc. Last weekend i thought i would change the 'common' leaking stearing box, went very well althought it took a bit longer than anticipated... Next job is back Shockers, then maybe all new bushes.. Deos anyone know what the little wheel thingy is located at one end of stearing damper ?? it look's a bit like an oversized shopping trolley wheel, and has a thick cable wrap around one side of it, it certainly has me baffled...
 
mine's got one of them too...

tried to figure out what it was... not in haynes manual.... so stopped worryin bout it...

maybe i'll get the answer now..

Just had a look through my disks and books and I think from your discribson it is a Harmonics Damper

It's all part of the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) stuff that all manufacturers try to reduce by clagging on extra weight here and there.
The vibration damper is just a blob of steel and rubber designed to soak up a bit of the vibration from the rear axle. You'll probably find a few others bolted to your Discovery. It's the same reason for the use of rubber doughnuts in the prop-shaft instead of UJ's. (The doughnuts are also supposed to be cheaper and longer lasting as the have no moving parts.)

Wrong Wrong you are. A Harmonics damper removes the torsional vibration from the crank shaft and acts as a pulley to drive your fan belts. other wise your crank shaft bearings would get flat spots on them in time,and makes your engine vibrate less.

just going by discription and putting what the bad pic on the disc said and quick google search

I'm gradully picking info about motors, only way you learn is by fourms like this and from each others
