?alarm problem/starting problem

Hi there everyone,

Any good advice gratefully received.
I bought a 1999 disco 2 td5 GS in devon last week and took it 1200 miles down to france where I now live. It was amazing, drove perfectly. Used it last night to come home from work, no problems. This morning I went to start and when i turned the key in the ignition the alarm went off and it wouldn't start. Tried testing all the doors, locking/unlocking, disconnecting the battery (very briefly), nothing worked. The alarm light on the dash board doesn't flash rapidly for 10 seconds when I open it so don't think its the battery in the fob. I then tried using the EKA which gave the expected 2 beep result, still didn't start. Now the 'preparatory' lights on the dash don't even light up when I turn the key in the ignition, it makes a whirring sound and the noise the alarm makes is weakening. Can't see any faulty cables or fuses under the steering wheel or next to the battery, can't find the receiver in the roof space (is it behind that giant snake of cables?) but can see that the rear interior light is rusted and bulbless with some staining on the interior roof lining which suggests damp problems in the past.
Im not an expert so please explain in simple terms what might be the problem and what I may do to fix it.

flat battery?

Hi, i can't deduce from your post if the fob works or not to unlock the vehicle or you worked with the key nor if the non starting means no crank or it cranks but doesnt fire... if the fob works and unlocks it's not immobilised also if the EKA was entered succesfully it should start anyway as long as there's enough battery power, the fact that it turns the starter doesnt mean too much cos the voltage can drop below 10V with a well spinning starter but the ECU will not open the injectors.

So if it doesnt crank check the solenoid connector on the starter and the main lead eventually give it a tug with something, if it cranks but doesnt fire give a good charge to the battery and try then or use jump leads, if no joy it might be some trouble with the BCU and that's bad

Sounds like starter is not engaging and battery is failing. Give it a good charge and try again.

Thankyou for all your responses and suggestions.
Finally it was a battery problem, the fact that the alarm was going off threw me off track.
Chnged the battery with my one year old and two year old in tow and now works perfectly, even started up a few other cars with some jump cables (I feel duty bound to help out, got a landy after all)
