i have a td5 year 2000 ,and have been having problems with what i think are leaking rear air bags, so after reading how to test them on here, i tried to put the car in off road mode, but when i press the button it just chimes and it dose not raise the back, any ideas ?

You need to have the engine running, all doors shut and hold the button for about three seconds. You will hear it chime, but then you will notice the appropriate dashboard light flash continuously for about 10 secs whilst it raises. Once raised, the light will stay lit. To deflate, simply press and hold again, or go over 18MPH.

Form the manual:

NOTE: If axle displacement is excessive,
selection of the off-road height setting may be
prohibited. In this case three warning chimes
will sound.
NOTE: If changes to or from off-road height
are prohibited (e.g. door open) the chime will
sound three times.

, i have one other question, when the back goes down it is equal both sides now im thinking maybe its not the air bags .unless they have both starting leaking at the same time! is ther some sort of valve maybe that could be letting the air out, any input would be helpful

If it wont rise at all it sounds like a dead compressor, not unusual,I,ve done about 8 in the last 2 months, you could just check the relay and fuse for it in the engine compartment fuse box.

Mine does this very occasionally if I leave the car for over a week and it's got a load in. If you look at the schematics for the system you can see that both bags eventually come to the same supply from the compressor and there are sprung non-return valves involved. I cam to the same conclusion as you, that because the bags had deflated equally, a shared componed must be to blame. Sometimes vavles can not seat properly - leading to an intermittent problem.
