L322 Air Suspension gone mad !

This will about the 3rd time you have charged the battery - are you sure it is OK?

Looks like you are on a path to a resolve, I had to 'cheat' my readings to get it to sit level....I also found that once the calibration was done, going for a drive seemed to make the heights settle down a bit....the nature of the L322 suspension geometry is such that as it rises up, the wheels actually begin to move inward, and conversely as it goes down the wheel move outward....this can cause the heights not be correct as the friction of the tyre prevents the suspension from fully articulating in the desired direction, so I have found going for a quick drive round the block and back again, can help to settle the suspension down again.

Worth a shot!

Afternoon all :) thank you for all your replies! I hope you all well & safe.
@backinblack Did you manage to calibrate in one try? I'm not expecting perfection I don't think I've ever seen a range rover with all 4 corners identical :)

@holidaychicken Yeah it looks like I'm going to have to cheat the system get it near level and just test it, I did pop to the shop yesterday in her and I had just reached the end of my road I got "Air Sus Inactive" the evil "Articulation Validity Fault" but I definitely expected that as she's nowhere near level as the calibration is not correct atm. Once she throws that code I then just inflate/ deflate her manually so I can get about for now. So before the new front height sensors, it was working 95% of the time, the only time I would ever get the "Articulation Validity Fault" would be due to one of my front tires being at low pressure as I have a slow puncture for a while, however the minute I re-inflated the tire & get back in the car and start her up bang the system came back on again by itself. However when going into off-road mode before I would get the front come up and not the rears & sometimes she would go into off-road mode fine. This is why I wanted to change all the sensors I started with the front as that's the one that seemed to give bad data with 43v etc. After I changed the sensors I drove her out of the garage and managed to get her straight into off-road mode then back down to standard and then into access no worries !! However, my dad mentioned the front left was still too high as it always has been it doesn't bother me so much as that's the way shes always sat as long as I can remember. Then while I nipped inside to fetch something my dad decided to start calibrating the system and ever since then it's just gone a wee bit bonkers. When I changed the sensors I had a really good look at the numbers inside them where the connection pins are and matched them to the old sensors it could be possible but it seems like I'm getting the bad data from a rear corner now with that huge 20,000 mm offset. I will definitely check all other systems next as I know she has a wealth of data from different modules I definitely think it's worth getting it near level and then just leave & test as you mentioned :)

@Saint.V8 Yea the battery is absolutely fine I purchased a brand new Boche battery at Christmas, as I'm running her with the ignition on a lot with the Foxwell plugged in & she's not really going anywhere during the lockdown I just want to prolong the life of the battery as much as I can as we all know Rangees eat batteries and their not cheap XD I agree I don't think I'm too far away from getting her working again & as per all the amazing replies cheating the system is definitely the way to go :) I have witnessed this happening whenever shes on the ramp when I'm working on her as when she comes down the tires look awfully weird. Also, I learned how sensitive the system was when low tire pressure used to upset the system. I totally agree on a road test around the block each time I'll know if the calibration has worked as hopefully I won't get the dreaded bong :D or would you suggest just keep resetting it to allow it to gather more data? I'm going to purchase two new rear sensors this week just so I can rule it out as that huge offset it rather erroneous compared to every other reading being around the three-figure mark, found some for just over £20 which for RR parts that's cheap as chips.

I've been giving her a lot of TLC during lockdown as the previous owner didn't and she's a beut! Hopefully planning to do the Strata Florida next year hence why off-road mode may be req.

Thank you all for being so helpful, what an amazing community!

Stay Safe all.

Kind Regards Harry

@MrMach2 Yes eventually but it did take a few attempts. I also used it on another forum members L322 as he was having issues with his snapon tool. I still get the articulation error every now and again but I just reset it and think how much I saved doing it myself. :)

I also found that once the calibration was done, going for a drive seemed to make the heights settle down a bit....the nature of the L322 suspension geometry is such that as it rises up, the wheels actually begin to move inward, and conversely as it goes down the wheel move outward....this can cause the heights not be correct as the friction of the tyre prevents the suspension from fully articulating in the desired direction, so I have found going for a quick drive round the block and back again, can help to settle the suspension down again.

That was why I suggested he leave it in neutral with the handbrake off whilst calibrating, I'm sure some people probably thought I was mad but you've explained it a lot better than I would have!

Harry,

I gave up on my old early RR in the end, it was sat exactly where it should have been on all 4 corners and still threw up the articulation validity fault once going over about 15MPH.
I tried dropping it all down a little, lifting it slightly above where it should have been to no avail. Spent hours and hours on the damn thing and researching it.

I wouldn't waste your money on new height sensors if they are working and giving readings.

It didn't give the articulation validity fault before you tried calibrating it, did it?

If not and you noted down the original height readings, I would suggest putting it back to how it was originally and drive it see if it throws the fault and go from there.

You will love Strata Florida, did it a few times in the Disco, fantastic lane. I would avoid the bomb hole unless you're feeling brave and have a good spotter that will put some rocks down to stop you possibly loosing your bumpers !

@MrMach2 now I have her running again I connected my Foxwell and this is what I have. Don't forget mine is on 20" rims and I didn't knock 1/2 off the heights when I set mine up.
My drive is also a bit uneven so will effect the readings.

Good Evening everyone I hope you are all well, apologies its been a long time since my previous post sadly I've been very busy. However (touch wood ... intensely) I believe my issue is finally fixed I've been manually adjusting my suspension since May time. So with a new flatter surface I decided to reset all codes and try re-calibrating my suspension again. To my utter disbelief after just going on a long test run I think she is finally fixed. She's still a smudge low and the front left corner but nothing's perfect! I think i finally know where I was going wrong. Yesterday once I'd reset my codes and then entered the calibration mode (before entering values) I just left the car for a good 10 minuets for the suspension to jack up into calibration mode as it will rise up initially but after a good 5 mins in she was still making fine adjustments. So After 10 ish minuets had passed and the compressor had been nice and quiet for a while I measured from the bottom of the wheel rim lip to the arch as Saint V8 advised & hey presto shes driving without errors and going into all modes in quick manner. I'm astonished after battling with this problem for a long time. My question now is do I re calibrate again in a weeks time after driving for a while just to get her sitting a little bit better or do I just leave it ? For anyone that would like the highest resolution chart ill attach it here. Thank you for all of you help again ! Kind Regards Harry

Hi, I have just got myself into a similar pickle trying to correct a lean on my 2003. I got the Foxwell today and have had my suspension all over the place and now is worse than when i started!

What is the fool proof way of achieving a level rover? Put it into calibration then wait 10 minutes? Then go for a drive? I have the standard 19" wheels.

Welcome to @dwarfer world @APRES ( sorry @dwarfer just had to do it )

Well went out and had another go, waited patiently for it to all level up in calibration height. Did my measurements, seemed a bit off but almost right so went for a drive and then got air suspension inactive along with a helpful code. My right rear height sensor has gone out of wack, mechanically it’s looking sound but reading is miles out. Having already changed the front sensors have now ordered rear ones then will try again!

So now you have joined my world as well, my right rear went on the blink so new genuine and its miles off, pick yet another one tomorrow and hoping for the best.

I’ve pre-empted that and ordered a pair of rears! Had a break from owning one of these and forgot how much ‘fun’ they can be!

how much fun they can be....o_O
@kds and me @ dwarfer are having sooo much fun too, infact i did not know we could possibly have this much fun, and still the battle continues to get the car to look level, everyones probably already said there are lots of things to check out before calibration and procedures blah blah..but at least with the foxwell you can look at the parameters in live data in all four corners of eas and if data is missing there, it gives a starting point..good luck , your in the club now, and in our thoughts.:)

I doubt you will get it perfectly level as they have built in a good few mm tolerence.
i reckon my tollerances was calibrated in inches then:D,
as its soo far out, i mean nowhere near, up, down, wonky, crooked, off roadin or weed eating its all over the place, at one point i thought it were having an epiletic fit. and then the time that passes before anything happened , if anything at all !.
still im not bitter:) @kds and me have similar troubles, after the basics and trouble shooting we've now gone into the world of oem and none oem spares and that minefield, oh yeah heights sensors with brackets made out of cheese that bent straight away causing even more issues, yep made from cheese, it had all the strength of a dmp lettuce leaf... so waiting for that outcome to be resolved.
i reckon theres a steven king novel in here somewhere.. l322 the horror that cant be stopped/ or fixed...

I’m down in sunny Worthing.

Feeling treasonable confident I can get it sitting right once the rear sensors are done as that’ll be all four!
@APRES im in damp dreary rainy littlehampton, we are neighbours!
i too thought i was confident in getting it level afer changing four sensors.... the woes continue

Quick question, does the Foxwell say your compressor is overheating and shutting down when it's trying to get to calibration height? so it doesn't actually get to that reference height.

hi there backinblack..
no, the compressor has been an area of pain..( im touching some wood )
changed for a none oem part piston ring ,that was made from a recycled flip flop, that produced a whopping 6 bar, so had another one delivered 'sometimes we get one fail' fitted that one no difference, put the old oem one back in and made 11,5 bar slooowly, then as im a glutten for punishment i ordered a new cylinder and ring from china and it is perfect, no issues at all, comes upto pressure fast, who said chinese made stuff was naff'..amazed..
when ive done calibration n stuff i check values and make sure pressure up an temps down and push car back n forth bounce suspension, shake the steering, and waiting a good 5 to 10 minutes for system to pump up and reach it potential, infact short of reading it a bedtime story and kissing it goodnight ive done just abot everything!
i think if ( hope ) once the height sensor bracket issue is resolved, then weather permitting i can get on with it again, but we've got a 12wk old staffy boy now and its difficult getting on with anything because hes so needy...well thats my excuse!...
