I have a 96 300tdi auto which has been suffering from poor running ever since the starer motor went. I replaced the motor, but ever since the engine starts poorly, and the "check engine" light has been on. I had it checked out by a local mechanic who said it wasn't anything major and that if I could live with it it would be ok to run like that. So thats the way its been for the last three or so months. Took the car into a main LR dealer yesterday to get a key fob re-programed. Whilst the car was there they did a free "healthcheck" and gave me a long list of other faults with the car. They told me the poor running that I've been experiancing is down to the air flow meter. As I said this has been the case ever since I did the start motor. I have always assumed that when I did the start I removed/unplugged something which I later forgot to put back in, hence the problem. Can someone tell me where exactly the air flow meter is, and what it looks like, so I can check it out.
Many thanks
Tim

It's normally a square/rectangular shaped affair. Situated between the air filter and air intake to the engine. Should have 3 inch pipes(approx) fitted to either end.

Hi Tim, find your square air filter box, coming out of that is a corrogated platic pipe about 3"diam, 6-8 long, then there is a square metal box affaire with a plastic plug & socket - that's the air flow meter.

First thing I would do to test this, get someone in the drivers seat with the engine ticking over, you find the plug and while the engine is running disconnect it and listen carefully for any change in engine note. Do it again at say 2-2500rpm.

If when you disconnect the MAF (Mass Air Flow) meter the engine note changes, the unit is working to one degree or another. I would then clean the sensor with switch cleaner and try again. Otherwise replace....
