Is it worth upgrading the air filter element on my TD4 with a cotton gauze/foam types. if so which is best K&N, Green filters,BMC?

I tried a td4 before and after a k&n oil type fitting and other than the more noise couldn't tell any difference at all ,my personal opinion its all a load of tosh, unless you cool that air through a vortex first , and they are expensive. . .

on an otherwise standard engine you wil see a very small rise in power - the K&N is however a very reliable filter which should last the life of the vehicle if correctly looked after. Fitting a vortex is a non starter if the engine is fitted with a turbo (despite what the manufacturers might claim)!

Hi Blue Sparky,

I have a K&N installed myself and coïncidence or not but shortly after my MAF meter went bananas, (I still suspect the oil in the K&N fuc...d it up, can't prove it of course but...,) also did not notice any significant change as extra power etc.. only advantage is that it will last a lifetime but besides that I have my real doubts. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Hello Ming
I hav'nt had my TD4 very long, and as you do I thought it a good idea to change the filters (Landrover dealers 'Strat***ne' qouted £200 just to do the filters and the oil).
Anyway I bought the air filter '£16' and lifted the bonnet.
I'm not a complete novice with servicing, but I had no idea where to start.

It's an 04 TD4
Any chance of pointing me in the right direction ?

Thanks
Dennis

3 x 10mm bolts for engine cover
6 x 5mm allen key to remove the air filter upper housing right at the back of the engine

2 x phillips screws to release tension on air intake pipe, this helps when you put the filter top back on as mine can be difficult to line up

unplug air intake pipe from airfilter cover and then lift off

u will struggle to get to the 2 allen key bolts at the back, i use a screwdriver with an allen key bit on

read the heinz manwell ,as shutty says its a bit fiddly first time so take it slow ,the caption screws at the back are a real pain , but take your time and second go is er doddle. . . .best oh luck earthling:)

I managd to pick up a flexible drive screwdriver for the fittings at the back. Made life a little easier. It was a swine to get it all back together because the back fasteners wouldnt align with the ajoining holes. Got there in the end with a bit of brute force and ignorance.
