As some of you will know I am rebuilding my 90. Years ago when I fitted the 300tdi to it (2.5NA position), as a stop gap; literally to get me driving again and to see me through to the next weekend, I fitted one of these stupid exposed boy racer type filters.
Now about 5 years down the line I am getting to think about this again and hopefully come up with a better idea, back in the spring I bought a Donaldson air cleaner, which has a primary and secondary filter in it as per the Wolf spec. I even bought up spare filters for it.
I went to fit it into the engine bay the other day and after some time spent fabricating a cradle, and fitting it to the vehicle I decided I wasn't pleased with it, I wasn't happy about the clearances between the water pipes and the filter body, and the top of the filter body and the underside of the bonnet. So I pulled it all out and decided that I have lost this fight.
My intention had been to remove the washer bottle, and in the gap left, fit the cleaner. However given the size of it, it was just going to cause more issues than is solved. I had considered fitting it on the aircon mount and then piping it round the front of the engine to the turbo inlet, but to be honest this sounds messy and I am sure would look messy not to mention the 3 feet of extra pipe the air would need to pass along.
So I have decided I will go for some sort of other cleaner housing, it needs to be suitable for the size of engine, and it needs to be small enough to slot in somewhere. I was thinking maybe a Transit cleaner or some sort of aftermarket unit.
All and any help would be much appreciated.
My Donaldson cleaner and filters is now for sale if anyone wants it, it would fit no bother in a standard 300tdi position etc. It can be submersed for 30mins and will not let water into the engine, might be good for those of you who like playing at U-boats.
