As some of you will know I am rebuilding my 90. Years ago when I fitted the 300tdi to it (2.5NA position), as a stop gap; literally to get me driving again and to see me through to the next weekend, I fitted one of these stupid exposed boy racer type filters.

Now about 5 years down the line I am getting to think about this again and hopefully come up with a better idea, back in the spring I bought a Donaldson air cleaner, which has a primary and secondary filter in it as per the Wolf spec. I even bought up spare filters for it.

I went to fit it into the engine bay the other day and after some time spent fabricating a cradle, and fitting it to the vehicle I decided I wasn't pleased with it, I wasn't happy about the clearances between the water pipes and the filter body, and the top of the filter body and the underside of the bonnet. So I pulled it all out and decided that I have lost this fight.

My intention had been to remove the washer bottle, and in the gap left, fit the cleaner. However given the size of it, it was just going to cause more issues than is solved. I had considered fitting it on the aircon mount and then piping it round the front of the engine to the turbo inlet, but to be honest this sounds messy and I am sure would look messy not to mention the 3 feet of extra pipe the air would need to pass along.

So I have decided I will go for some sort of other cleaner housing, it needs to be suitable for the size of engine, and it needs to be small enough to slot in somewhere. I was thinking maybe a Transit cleaner or some sort of aftermarket unit.

All and any help would be much appreciated.

My Donaldson cleaner and filters is now for sale if anyone wants it, it would fit no bother in a standard 300tdi position etc. It can be submersed for 30mins and will not let water into the engine, might be good for those of you who like playing at U-boats.

i fitted a donaldson one just like you did mate the other day, tucked in the corner where the washer bottle was, and ive moved that elsewhere. It is tight, but it is neat and i thought it was good to have all the intake, snorkel outlet etc in the same place, minimise pipework etc.

Those cheapo enclosed ones dont really work very well, fine for smaller engined cars but not a proper performance product. The filtration on them is very poor. And they are loud as fook!

Right, I need pictures please! LOTS!

What ever I do I want decent air filtration.

LOL will try and get some for you but itll be dark later on. I need to make a nice bracket for it as its just cable tied on at the minute. Ive seen a simple moulded plastic gas canister holder which looks perfect, for the princely sum of £3 :)

Good evening Discomania,

This was how I installed the Donaldson filter in my old 200tdi 90. I fabricated a bracket and utilised the air con pump mounting post on the timing case. It can be done and it can look relatively tidy:

Yeah maybe this is what I will need to do. I remember we discussed this method at the time. The 90° section you have used from the air cleaner inlet, what did you use - is that the LR one?

Whats the ducting/tubing you used as well and whats the internal diameter of it? Mines is sorely in need of replacing and that looks like good quality stuff

The 90 degree reducer is I believe a Land Rover part but I honestly don't know what engine it came from - it was one I just found laying around. It was a very tight fit over the lip of the air filter housing but it went on with a bit of encouragement and made a good tight seal.

It's a silicone CAF (Cold Air Feed) pipe that I bought here: Blue Silicone Ducting - Air Ductings AP Motor Store. I can not remember the diameter of the pipe though I'm afraid. Whether or not it will be the same diameter as the standard Land Rover hose I don't know either!
