Hi All,

I have a noise coming I think from bottom of engine TD4 , that sounds like an old fashioned Tommy gun when I rev the engine.

Engine sounds fine no low end knocks and the camshaft sound fine, have not noticed any loss of power so don't think it's the turbo.

Starting to think that it could be the air conditioning compressor.

Has anybody heard a similar noise and experienced the same.

More importantly was it the air con compressor?

Regards and thanks

Keith

I can here at metallic vibration as well I thought when you switched on air con it energised the plates that brought the centre in to play, I am thinking these plates may be buggered hence the noise of the tommy gun sound and the vibration?

it does, but shouldnt when its off ,ive had them fail on other engines

Iirc there can be a problem with the crank pulley where the vibration damper brakes down resulting in a very similar noise to what you describe.

Happens a lot on rover 75s

Hi there,

Sounds good call, do you know how I go about repairing the crankshaft pulley dampers.

I can't see anything other than removing the pulley itself.

Thanks again

Keith

can you see and metal swarf around the crank shaft pulley it will sparkle at you if you sine a light on it ,if there is then it is your pulley, others describe it like a motor mower. how many miles has the motor done, also if you replace the pulley see if it has a woodruff key in it if not then it does not have one if there is one there ,then replace it.

don't forget that the side shield between the wheel arch and the engine bay can sometimes become a bit displaced, which causes the plastic shield to rub on the air con pulley, and can make a sound a bit like a tommy gun...

might be worth a quick check before embarking on a whole load of grief
