Clutch kit (plate-disk-bearing) & clutch kit (hydraulic set)

if the pressure plate int worn yer dint need to replace it.. if the bearing has no sign of wear yer dint need replace it. if yer hydraulics are fine yer dint need replace them..

why do folk insist on replacing parts that don't need replacing?

ok if yer bearing has sign that its starting to wear then change it while yer there but otherwise why bother?

i've replaced clutches in performance cars and only renewed the friction plate. the pressure plate and release bearing will normally last for atleast the life of 3 friction plates.. assuming you don't ride the clutch or drive it past the point when it becomes clear something is slipping.

If you do scrap the gearbox and ird, drain oils etc for replacing just the disk then it will be tosh to leave the old plate and bearing for another time. Plus it is a freelander sooner or later they will fail too.
Hydraulics are also expendable.

going with that idea you might as well change the main bearings, crank seals, thrust washers and g/box input bearings while yer at it..

if the pressure plate isn't damaged why change it? if the bearings and hydraulics show no sign of wear why change them?

check them while you have them out but if they int gubbed then its just a waste of money to replace a part that will last atleast until the next time the clutch plate wears down.

Well it's now in garage and I'm expecting a bill of anything from £500 - £800 great! They're taking the gearbox out to fix it and will check clutch whilst they are at it.

Anyone got any suggestions as to a nice reliable car I could exchange for!

!

From the sounds of things it could be a gear selector, but I dont think its a gearbox overhaul job.

The MG boys have this problem with the PG1 gearbox, some gears are selected others are not. This is due to worn rose joints on the cables from gearstick to the PG1 gearbox. Different system in the hippo but still same principles apply.

The 5th gear rev thing would point to clutch slippage as suggested by others, but then again it could be failure of the clutch release mechanism, the hydraulic part.

I assume they still have to take gear box out to sort that though?

I dont think its the internal of the gearbox, if something was a miss you would get severe crunching due to the gubbins rattling around inside it.

The gear selector is a rod from the gearstick to the PG1 gearbox, the rubber bushes are very soft, I have still to modify these for a more effortless change. Its possible that the nylon bushes in the gearstick arent helping the reverse issue?????

Gearbox, IRD, prop shaft, driveshaft is removed to get at the clutch, unless of course you do the alternative method........ engine out, SEE LINK:

Well progress yes, but I had to have gear box replaced and they did the clutch plate kit whilst they were at it. Cost me mega bucks so I think I'll be trading it in sometime in the new year. Not sure for what but I can't keep up with the £££! I like driving the car but I have no confidence in it any more.

You'll regret it when the snow comes,

Shame about the gearbox, did they suggest a new clutch kit or did you insist on one fitted??

If Im totally honest, I dont think it was the gearbox, but then I havent looked at the vehicle so cant give a definitive answer. PG1 tend not to give problems until very high mileage

I just get the feeling the garage is shafting you.............not literally though.
