Advice Required Please

I have a 4.0 ltr V8 what has now done 81000, for the last year or so it probably does around 70 miles a week on short journeys. would it be good to use additives to try keep things good. STP petrol treatment, and good oil additive etc. gets serviced regular and oil changed just looking to keep it tip top

I don't think additives are your way to go but I'm assuming from the fact that you're mentioning them that you'll be doing your own basic servicing..
I'd start with a battery charger / conditioner as Rangies don't like low voltages and can develop all sorts of annoying faults from them.
Then I'd be thinking of ignoring the mileage when it comes to servicing and do your oil and filters annually. You're probably going to have more problems with condensation than the oil wearing out.
You might want to think the same way about brakes, including the handbrake. An annual run around cleaning and lubricating might be worth considering.
If it's only getting used as rarely as you say then I'd also wait a couple of minutes between starting and driving off just to make sure that the oil has circulated fully.

The other thing to consider is just using everything from time to time, from the low range gears through the heater controls to the sunroof (if fitted). Don't forget that things fail through lack of use and tender care almost as quickly as abuse.

agree with dogsbody. i do low mileages too but i try to throw in a few high speed runs now and then. also i do oils and filters twice a year rather than once, ie i don't do it based on mileage but at what i consider a decent interval. other than that, nothing special and car runs fine.

The battery keeps up fine it is only just over 1 year old and the largest battery that you can possibly get in there, the car was police spec straight from special vehicles (the police chose to go to BMW X5 at the time so these rangies were sold off reasonably priced) part of the spec was a heavy duty alternator larger battery and battery in the boot for aux lighting etc. Everthing works on the vehicle and the Missus use is it everyday she only does approx 3 miles to work and 3 miles home, then shopping once a week and wherever she goes on her day off when I'm at work which is never very far, surely this can not be good for the engine and i was thinking was there anything I can use as a engine cleaner injectors plugs etc
She wont drive the disco we have because it has gears she says

I'd carefully suggest she takes a longer run to work of at least 10 miles each way, just to get things warmed up. I'd have thought 3 mile trips from cold will cause problems from plug fouling (cold starts and running), oil dilution from petrol in that rich cold start situation and the gearbox just not heating up enough. I think twice yearly oil changes are a good idea and keep a close eye on everything else. I wouldn't use additives, just good quality oil. It's an initial expense but have you considered LPG? Not for the economy, but cause it burns really cleanly and reduces the amount of deposits and contamination in your engine. Just thoughts, I'm not a mechanic

That was my way of thinking, plugs getting carbon build up, oil deterioration etc
goes into Landranger for service and any jobs required on it and was advised not to get it converted to LPG has most of them end up with overheating problems

agree with others, get her to give it a good run every now & again to make sure all the condensation in the oil's gets burned off - also really dgood point re exhaust again, loads of short runs means lots of condensation in exhaust and the RR ones rust as much as any other
