Hi
I am currently looking at changing my 4x4, I am considering a disco TD5 but I have been told to avoid them as they are unrelable and a money sink pit, which is what I want to avoid as I already have a Japanese version of this.
Can anybody point out the pitfalls of the TD5 engine please and are they common problems?
I use a vehicle for getting to and from work every day general running around and also towing usually around 2.5 tonnes

many thanks

Trev

a well serviced and clean example of the d2 will do all of those things - dont expect japanese build quality ( but at least the accelerator wont stick on and the the brakes will work ) and be prepared to give it a little tlc and the td5 is a tremendous engine - almost as good as the 300tdi :D:D

brakes work on mine and accelerator don't stick but can I hell as like stop diesel getting in the water without great expense, could be worse though the diesel could get into the oil

If you're lucky it'll be fooked fuel cooler. If yer unlucky you have a cracked injector rail like I had. If that is the case you're gonna need a new cylinder head.

trooper 3.0.
always had a slight diesel / oil leak since I've had it for 2 years. Last MOT I asked them to see if they could see it when they had it on ramp, negative was their reply. Got worse in Jan and filled the expasion bottle to overflow with diesel. flushed system and put in some autogem seal until I got round to repair. It stopped leak. replaced injector sleeves and flushed system now leaking as bad again.
My theory
Add K seal run up, then drop injector rail pressure and leave to soak then drop water and leave overnight.

i suppose i could always put pressure tester on rad whilst no pressure in diesel and force mixture into porous part.

It might work. The other option would be to just flush the coolant system and fill it up with pretty pink antifreeze so it all looks nice, and then stick it straight into the auction.

 it will be back on a new thread with new owner-burn it and save everyone the hassle -snigger

my experience of k seal is it will stop minor leaks, but is no magical cure. You may consider cargo seal up as another alternative to hide the fault.
But my advice if it will do it is clean antifreeze and auction it-you'll take a hit but it may be better than a new head.

anyway back to original topic
I have been advised that td5's have a similar problem and others to go with themis this true? I know all you Landy owners will say no but I would like a true opinion, we also have a freelander and up till now that has only had what I would call minor running faults
