Hello.

The recommended tyre size for my Triplesport 17" alloys is 225/55/R17.

I'm about to buy a full set of rubber so that I can swap my 15" wintertime steelies for the posh alloys.

I know where there are some Conti part-worns (5mm left) going cheap. However they are 235/65/R17 - marginally wider and higher.

The local tyre fairies and Stratsone say that they will wear quicker in the centre due to the fact that they're wider than standard but, of course, they'd rather sell me their own tyres.

Anybody got any views?

Ta!

They definitely wont fit. :( Not even with spacers I think.
They will rub against the front spring bottom cups.

Even if they did fit they are also far too big in diameter. Your speedo would be well out, and acceleration down. :(

The max size is 235/55 17 - that gives you about 7 or 8 mm clearance to allow for tyre flex on hard cornering.

I have 8 wheels all fitted with 235/55 17s
Conti4X4Contact for the Winter and ContiSport2 for the Summer.

Nothing wrong with buying part-worns - just not these ones.

Sorry.

Thanks Singvogel.

I appreciate the straight talking advice but I'm a little confused. My motor is a 2000 Freelander 1 2.0 Xdi L.

The tyres I've found are Conti 4 x 4 Contacts and the width is 235. This is the same as on your 8 wheels yet you say they won't fit my car. Are you running a different model?

I understand that they're a bigger diameter but this could be offset by the RoverRon VP32 tuning module Stratstone are going to fit for me, replacing the MAP sensor at the same time if it isn't 100%.

I am leaning towards leaving these partworns alone after reading your comments but but a clarification of the above would seal the deal.

My alternative is a set of budget kit, probably WestLake or Wanli. I don't do a lot of miles and I'm not a boy racer.

Thanks

Hi Dtwo,

The problem is not with the width it's the diameter which is too big.

The 235s are indeed marginally wider but they are considerably larger in diameter.

225/55 17 are 690mm diameter
235/55 17 are 700mm - this is the max before you hit the spring cups.
235/65 17 are 750mm - so the tread edge is 30mm higher than what you have now - no way will this fit.

I have tried and measured all the sizes within the 'approved' 4% of the original size.

235/55 are 1.6% bigger - so OK.
235.65 are 8.6% bigger - so no good, even if they did fit.

The Wanli are not that great in the wet

There are lots of part worn 235/55 17 tyres on eBay if cost is a problem.
That's where I buy my ContiSport2s for the Summer - but they are of no use in snow or slush at all. That should be no problem for you - having the steel wheels and tyres for Wintertime.

I change mine over when the clock changes.

Hope that explains why I am so sure that 235/65s wont fit.

I admit I am a bit of a tyre freak.

i searched hi& low for the "perfect" freelander tyres every one seemed to be pointing me in direction of the bf goodrich advage t\a that was on it - its now a g grip style but i managed to get 4 pirelli scorpions today 225/55/17 (02 td4) to say its a different jeep is an undersatement.. super quiet and smooth to drive and absolutely sticks to the road would def advise anyone to spend the bit extra for the quality.. only got 2,500 miles out of last set of bf's:(

Pirellis Scorpion ST & ST R are original kit on the Freelander, I have them on mine and they perform and wear extremely well.
Good tyre choice.

I'd just get some standard size ones if I were you. I have a Freelander 1 (55 plate) on 17s. I have Marshal Road Ventures for the summer and Sunny Snowmasters for the winter. Both are really really good. I am used to sports cars and have had to buy a 4x4 with decent dog space as needs must, and I am very impressed with the handling to be honest. Plus neither of those tyres will break the bank, unlike the £130+ a corner tyres I am used to!!!!

Thanks mate.

Now I'm with you. I didn't realise that the apparently small increase in aspect ratio resulted in such a large increase in the tyre diameter.

I'll keep well away from the cheap Contis.

I'll stick the link you've sent me into my favourites and take it from there. It's not cost that's the problem here. I'm an angler and although I do a reasonable amout of miles I've got a boat, caravan or trailer on the back half the time and for the rest of it I don't drive recklessly (if that's possible in a Mk 1 Freelander). I don't think expensive high performance rubber is necessary.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
Sorry to horn in on this thread but I need help :confused::confused:
Need to buy a set of rubber for my TD4 size 225 55 17, was quoted £180 a corner for these Pirelli Scorpions you mention, I can't afford £720 :eek: on top of the VCU and other pennies being spent right now so rang around for some quotes. Got everything from £240 for a set of 'budget' tyres..... (not getting these) right up to the £720 for the Pirellis. There were two options in the middle which seem to be a bit more plausible, £498 for a set of Uniroyals or £460 for a set of Falkins. My question is are any of you using or have used either of these and got any advice?
I should just add my TD4 is only being used by me for normal everyday driving at the mo and will be towing our caravan in the spring/summer so only off roading it will do is on a caravan pitch :D

HEEEEEELLPPPP

The cheapest i found the pirelli's was £140 and that was from halfrauds. Blackcircles normally have some sort of deal going on aswell.

Cheers mate, the wife found them on Halfords, according to the reviews on lovetyres they last rather well on big 4x4s as well, so she has her instruction now :)

Out of interest, does anyone know how the internet tyre places work? The wife asked all the local vendors about fitting internet tyres and got a flat 'No way' :(

Some of the offers out there are very much cheaper than anywhere, including Halfords and KwikFfit, but no good if we can't get them fitted :(

Almost nobody wants to know - especially for new tyres. :(

I bought some 2nd hand tyres and only one tyre-shop was prepared to fit them - £10 a tyre!

Singvogel.

With two cars and a motorcycle if I had a garage with electric I'd get a tye fitting doodad off eBay, but with just a shed and a drive that's never going to work, which is a pity as the savings would be pretty decent :(

i was looking for tyres about a month ago to go on a standard 03 plate. 235 65 17 do not fit i tried they hit the spring cups at the front but ok on rear. in the end i got a set of michielin pilots 225 55 17 part worn (about 500 miles ) £30 each

Check your local main dealer. They have offers of £99 per corner fitted. Seen it several times at mine. Good tyres anorl.

Blackcircles give you the option of getting them delivered to your home or to a garage to to be fitted. I've had a look at other sites and they do the same, can't remember which ones though. My local garage charges £40 to fit tyres that you bring in.

Sorry to jump in and highjack this thread but can somebody tell me if these tyres are good for my freelander. Halfords have then advertised at £138.19 each fitted at the moment.

Pirelli 225 55 R17 97H SCORP STRM+S

Thanks in advance for your advice.
