Hi guys!
Had the L322 for a couple of weeks now, all is good but I am thinking of changing the auto gearbox fluid soon. I heard they are not really 'sealed for life'. Do you reckon this is a good idea, and what equipment would I need to complete the change, e.g. filters or specific grades of oil.
Any help would be great!

You’ll need around 5 litres of Texamatic 7045E for a drain & refill

Only use a genuine Filtran filter :

(Land Rover sell the filter as a kit with the steel/rubber sump gasket and bolts)

Follow the fluid level setting procedure closely :

Although I'd be proud to be the owner of such a pump, unfortunately it's not mine - I stole the photo from another forum :)

Up on ramps to give more room

I use a cheap garden sprayer with the lance removed to pump oil into the box, I got fed up of pumping so I fitted a schrader valve so I can presurise it from my compressor:)

you will be there all day with a garden sprayer ! and sod pumping it up by hand if you dont have the compressor ! lol :D

Yer thats great thanks. How many miles has yours got on it? Is it the original box?
When this weather clears up I might have a stab at it

No problems mate.

well shes now done 143K miles !!

really not sure if its original box or not, i have no service history with the car when i bought it so i couldnt tell you for sure.

but im 100% sure it cant be on its original box with that mileage ??

can anyone back me up ???

saying that, the box has only done motorway mileage most of its life, infact it did 80,000 miles in one year alone which only could have been motorway miles.

so being on a motorway requires no real work from the box, maybe its on its original box.

i was wondering if there's any way of me telling from the serial numbers on the gearbox whether or not its been re-furbed ???

Sounds like a good idea changing the oil then. Its a shame the gearboxes are weak on the diesel l322's. Why couldn't they of put a merc box in, my e300td is on 152 k and I've seen taxis with 500k on the original box!
I think your gearbox will be as good as any town driven car. It has probably done less changes in its life than mine! I also think its down to the way they are driven. Some plonker thrashing theirs around from cold is bound to get trouble. But I do realise it is troublesome!

it run down my pipe really quick actually, filled up the box within 5 mins of pouring 1L at a time. its not very thick when new that oil

I'm born lazy, I can sit on the slider in my pit, 5 litres of oil in the spray tank, a quick squirt of compressed air, job done. Oil comes out like a fire hose

hah, yes its a shame they fked up the boxes on these, otherwise they would be an even better motor. as the engines are great, about the only thing ;)

my box still changes a smooth as anything from cold or hot, even smoother once you change the oil and filter.

and once i fitted the tuning chip to mine the box changes gears earlier so that not to hang in gear for too long, so as to save fuel :)

they feel damm slow once the chips taken off :D

yes, datatek the chips will lower the life of the box but i don't frash it all the time, its just nice to have more power when you need it, and it runs smoother with one fitted, ie less gear changes - so that must prolong the life in some way ??
