be interested to hear how you get on with the 215s - i've just bought some 15" steels and contemplating some ATs - Blackcircles seem to do a decent range, i was originally going to go for the LR specified 195/80/15 but would go for the 215s if there are no rubbing issues.

Fancy the cooper ATs...

Freelander stud pattern 5 x 114.3 is rare and although a couple of smaller road cars use patfern FL is only 4x4 (plenty of aftermarket available for FL in 17" & 18" but unsuitable for off road use)

Many other manufacturers using 5 x 114mm as standard and i have found that if you are carfull when you fit them then there are no problems.

Only reason would bother is if you wish to fit wider tyres (i eventually intend to fit 235/75/15s)

If fitting wider tyres you also need to think about offsets etc

Wheels shown above are Oz Racing 15 x 7 (much lighter stronger & wider) and work perfectly well with lift and spacers but dont think they would fit a standard motor

Just joined-see my " hello" thread

I have a question about wheels, so I thought this topic was the best place.

The car has 225/55/17 Michekins, on, but i want some ATs, and they not really available in that size, as I am sure you know.

If I were to buy a set of 15" wheels, what size tyres would I need to put on?

The closest (for the same circumference) would be 215/70/15, but in your opinion what would you put on?

Depends what you want, if you just want so tyres slightly grippier than road tyres then i can recommend Pirelli Scorpion STR's. I bought a set of these when I first got my freelander with 17" alloys (225/55 R17). I have used these off road and they are ok. If you are wanting some serious grip then I bought 4 x 15" steel freelander wheels off of ebay for £40, i then put a set of Insa Turbo Saharas on (215/80 R15) and these have very aggresive tread. I would recommend. I have had no issues with them rubbing at all and I have over the last couple of weekends put them through their paces at the Abingdon 4x4 festival course and the 4x4 withoutaclub pay and play course. Will put some pics up with the Saharas on if i can work out how to do it. Any questions, just ask.

How does it behave on road with the new tyres on? The Mrs needs to be able to use it for work every day, which is 17 miles each way.

And I also assume that you have had no other issues?

Basically I will be driving across muddy fields, sometimes towing a trailer as well....

Well the Pirelli Scopion STR's are just like road tyres, quiet etc. I have these on for daily use and use the Saharas when I play. The Saharas as in the pictures in my previous post are noisy on the road and do effect the road holding. Hope this helps

I've just fully refurbished a set of 15" steels (same as above) with black hammerite and they look good. I stuck on a full set of Toyo 785 All Terrain tyres (215/80/15), these are great on the road - having said that, I'm fairly deaf so any road noise isn't really a huge issue. The Toyos were about £70 a corner from 'Black circles'.

Thats a lotta lead on the RR wheel, looks the part though

Don't forget if your overall rolling diameter is larger than stock your speedo will underread.
From the figures you have given 60MPH indicated would really be 64MPH approx. A larger diameter would require a greater torque to accelerate as well but I don't see it would be enough to take out driveshafts as you have been told.

With the InsaTurbo Saharas at 215/80 R15, the speedo in the freelander actually matches up perfectly with the reading i get from my tomtom satnav. Normally the speedo reads incorrectly with the 225/55 r17's that i have on.

That sounds about right - this is a useful converter here if changing wheel/tyre size - Car / SUV / Van / Light Truck Tire Calculations

Since I've moved from 215/65/16 to 215/80/15, for every 2 miles my car travels it now under-reads the distance by 0.1 mile. Bugger if you are claiming mileage for work related travel.
