Hi all

just wanted to see if anyone had any advice for changing a rear upper control arm suspension bush, i am planning on changing my creaking bush next week. Has anyone on here done this already and have any tips?

Thanks

Matt

Have you done this as mine are creaking.

Does not look too bad using the threaded Bar and socket method!

Hi

yes i have replaced my upper control arm bush, i used a small piece of scaffolding to sit on the outer hub and a piece of small diameter metal tubing to push on the bushes metal sleeve DO NOT push on the rubber part of the bush. I used a very long 1/2 inch automotive grade bolt with 4 2inch thick washers. At first i used M12 steel threaded bar from screwfix and all that happen was the bolts stripped the tread on the bar and then snapped the steel bar in two. Once you overcome the initial pressure of the bush it moves out of the hub quite easily. I am planning on doing my bottom bush in the next few weeks as changing the top bush has not solved the creak.

Do you have a copy of RAVE as you need to instructions on how to change the bush as you must mark the location of the old bolt so you can put the new bolt in exactly the same position as the bolt controls the wheel alignment e.g. camber etc...

Good luck it can be really annoying and frustrating

My advice for what it's worth is that before attempting any suspension type bush replacement, check out the local area for someone with a 30+ton hydraulic press just in case you have problems with the extractor bolt and tube method, after all they are assembled with a press...they don't frig about with threaded bar etc when they make them up.
I used to make a few bob on the side years ago in the UK as the firm I worked for had a 100ton press and I used to fit new bushes to Rangie and Disco suspension arms for a local Independant in my lunch hour. He then sold the parts on an exchange basis...old one in and rebushed one out at just a few quid over the cost of the bushes.
Now that's what you call making things easy !!!

the tool land rover use to extract and install is a threaded bar and cup arrangment i usualy replace the top and bottom together as they usualy are both worn

Thanks guys. I have RAVE and have had a good look at it.

Yeah I'm gonna do both the top and bottom on mine at the same time. My car has only done 52k miles too!

Have not decided if I should buy genuine parts or OE for about half the price.

Upper: RHF000260
Lower: RBK500220
Lower clip: RYV000010

I'm thinknig the cheaper ones to be honest. £52.19 inc del for Britpart items from L.R.Series.

MAT: How did you go about the job with reference to the air suspension?

The way i did it was i put the car in normal ride height - leave a door open at all times while you have the vehicle off the ground this will prevent the car from adjusting the height of the air suspension as when you start to jack up the car it will try and level its self.

I would always use genuine suspension parts the top bush cost be around £27 from land rover and the bottom bush is around the same cost. You will 100% sure that the parts will fit and you wont have any issues getting it in. Pattern parts can be a little bigger or smaller than genuine parts.

I will take a photo of the tool i used with sizes so you can see what i used to do the job.

Hi guys

As promised heres the pics of the bush removal tool that i made:

web.jpg

from right to left: 1/2 inch nut 10mm thick steel plate, 50mm diameter steel tubing, 5.5 inch long 1/2 inch thick bolt, the yellow part is a 44mm diameter steel hole cutter (with the teeth ground off), 3 thick steel washers to spread the load of the bolt head.

This is the tool together with the old bush in the middle:

Cheers Matt, I get the idea.

I removed rear road wheels and sprayed all the bushes with WD-40, but it seems to have had no effect as yet with regards to the squeeking.

It may help with removal though if I get it done shortly.
